Morph OS mac mini yes ..but powerbook g4?
« on: December 02, 2008, 08:48:24 AM »
I know that it's been developed (how much remaining work to be done I dont know)... Morphos for mac mini...

What about the powerbook g4 ?? their hardware are almost identical to mac minis g4...does the current mos version run on these machines ???

I am goin soon to get a powerbook g4..I searched for hw specs and what I see is that i will get a laptop macmini..
So I can assume that mos will run there...but Am I right ??

Rumours tell that at least one developer has installed it successfully on such laptop. AFAIK there won't be any official support for it, but if you're lucky, it might work. I don't know if there's any differences with needed drivers...
Daily MorphOS user and Amiga active.

Which hardware are you refering to?

Oh... and wasn't it an iBook G4 that was mentioned?

AFAIK you can *not* assume anything such!

MorphOS will run on Mac Mini. That's it. Until further notice, I guess.

I would love a MorphOS laptop myself BTW! :-)
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

Why not write MorphOS to run on all or most of the Mac G4 at least?
There have to be many more G4 towers and laptops available compared to macmini;the possible number of configurations is far fewer than x86 due to Apple being the sole motherboard and using limited selection of video cards(which can be changed out).

I blame/credit  you pointing out the $99 efika ;now I have TWO of them !Now learning how to use MorphOS since Windows has been company platform used every day for many years.

That would be a nice thing to do if they had unlimited resources.

Maybe they will? But one step at a time?

Didn't Apple do their own various custom chips (Northbridges/Southbridges/Whatever) for various machines? AFAIK, this is where the challenge is, those chips needs to be explored...

Not all Mac's are worth it though. Dual processor machines are not (IMHO), neither those using old and slow CPU's, nor those using nVidia (if it can't be replaced). I think there are lots of things to take in consideration.

The Mac Mini was a great start. It's very fast, very cheap, and it basically has everything you need.

A laptop would be great! I hope this will be the next move...

We get around the 32MB in that way we are all seeking the rather rare Mac Minis of the last silent upgrade the G4 Mini experienced. That way we'll get a 1.5 GHz maschine with 64 MB gfx mem.
64 MB are okay for Layers3D if you don't use highest resolutions and don't open too many screens/windows at a time.

So after the MacMini please at least make it run on iMac G4.
Plenty of them out there AND I just happen to have a nice lampshade model here.Surely 700 mHz should qualify, and  the iMacs are fairly "closed" ,i.e. not likely for user to change the internals.I think they went up to 1.25 gHz before switching to Intel cpu.
