2000 Startup
« on: September 20, 2008, 06:08:08 PM »
My 2000 had been running without problems for a couple years. I took ram off an installed Fusion board that had never worked. Next boot, the machine would hang at the end of startup. Using early interrupt to bypass the startup, all the drives were recognized etc. I tried a barebones startup-sequence and it still hung. Hardware right? I reseated everything, pulled the Fusion, and now no boot at all. The HD light pulses slowly and eventually the 3.1 insert system disk screen comes up. I guessing the next step is to start swapping...

Also, the memory didn't get recognized when I moved it to a Fastlane in my 4000 (I believe the jumpers are correct)...

Thanks

Remove the hard drive, and attempt booting from the floppy.
If it boots, you'll know the A2000 is OK.

I stripped everything out but the floppy. No luck. So I have now swapped the motherboard and psu. Still the same thing. I have to believe now that it is the 3.1 rom, which I transferred. Any other thoughts? Any way to test?

You say the computer worked fine until you took out some ram that never worked. Well, put it back in - problem solved!  lol

What OS are you running? I'm guessing you either don't have enough ram to start 3.9 or you have a scsi conflict/corrupt HD. My 2091 card does not like it when the GVP combo/scsi board is in. Takes FOREVER and a day for the system to boot when both are installed and 'on'. I believe that slow flashing HD lights are signs of a bad HD or conflict with something else.

BTW: If you see the 3.1 startup screen asking for a disk - chances are great that your KS chip is just fine.

Oh - if you're still trying to use the Fusion 40, you've got to make sure you've got the right setpatch/040 drivers installed... without that, you'll experience exactly what you're describing. And taken from Amiga-Hardware.com, says there must be 4mb of ram in the lower bank in order for the card to work properly...

Are you trying to boot the system with the 040 card or just the 68k?

I am running 3.1.

I'm going to be back at it tomorrow and will check the jumper... however this is a system that previously worked. The only thing that has been consistently connected in all my attempts has been the floppy itself. I guess I'll try disconnecting that??

Colchester CT... not far.

Thanks for assistance.

So if I understand it correctly you are now testing with a bare setup of only the A2000 mainboard and floppy drive with nothing else plugged in and it keeps asking for the system disk?

And even when you put the disk in, it still doesn't boot?
If so, can you see any read attempts, is the floppy drive light flashing? Or constantly on? Or no light activity at all on the floppy drive?

If you can't boot even after swapping the mainboard and power supply:
- something could be wrong with the floppy cable
it could be plugged incorrectly on either side
perhaps there is a loose connection in the flatcable

- floppy drive could be defective
If you have another drive to try I would suggest swapping the floppy. If that doesn't work you could try to swap the flatcable.

One time I also had some problems with my floppy cable. At one time during my testing the floppy kept running constantly and in the process erased part of my system floppy. So make sure you have a verified working boot disk during your testing.
