Default Dead Apollo 1240?

G"day All

My Apollo 1240 accelerator seems to have died.

This is what I've found so far:

When i power my A1200 all i get is a black screen. i can't even get the early boot screen by holding the two mouse buttons on boot.

The fan om the 68040 works when i power up.

I've put the RAM Simm in my A4000 and its ok.

Put in a different SIMM in the accelerator makes no difference.

Take the accelerator out and the A1200 boots.

Put the accelerator in another working A1200 and get same black screen, not even internal floppy clicks.

The clock crystal is not soldered on the board. I have another old crystal untested but putting this in makes no difference. In fact its the same black screen even if have no crystal there.

Normally the 68040 and crystal get warm, but not since the black screen.

I had this problem once before and it was because the crystal was dislodged, simply pushing in its socket fixed the problem, but not now.

Has anyone else had this problem? Would it make a difference soldering a new crystal onto the board?

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I also have a dead Apollo 1240. In my case the fan came detached and the cpu has overheated and fried itself.

There is a guy on here, PG, who will probably be able to fix it for you. I keep meaning to get in touch with him about mine, but never have the time as I am working away from home right now.

He has offered to try and upgrade the cpu to a 68060 and see if this fixes the problem. If it doesn't the only cost will be return postage.

I don't think he hangs around here much so probably better to email him rather than private message him.

Good luck!

Hi stefcep2

Back in 2001 I had similar problems to you. I ended up senting it back to Eyetech from whom I bought it and from what I can recall they did repairs to the board and put in a replacement crystal which is now held in place with silicon.

I do not think Eyetech support Amiga products anymore or are no longer in business.

Just an advice: never fire up a 68k accelerator without the crystal! The CPU will burn if you do so.

BTW: you have the caps lock blinking if you do manual reset (CTRL + A + A)? If so, you have a busted CPU only. Drop the board to someone you can trust and swap the CPU. Ask this person to solder the crystal for you, too.

Those loose crystals had kills more Apollo accelerators than bad fans.

@

As ajlwalker said your best off trying to get in touch with PG via email.

I think he is hanging around here less and less nowerdays as I havent seen him post much if at all recently.

Let us know how you get on as I might need to speak to him about my Apollo 060 (I think one of the SIMM slots has broken) :-(
