A4000 INTERNET WORKING WITH DENEB
« on: August 02, 2008, 10:18:31 PM »
Here's a little something to share with everybody, I've got my A4000D surfing the net using the Deneb USB card, OS3.9 and an off-the-shelf PC USB Ethernet device.

Here's the USB Ethernet device I bought for $19.99:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=443248&CatId=589

I plugged it into the Deneb which immediately detected it and mounted it as USBASIXETH.DEVICE unit 0.

Save your USB settings.

Now configure Genesis using the wizard"
Select "Network" for how you plan to connect.
For device enter "usbasixeth.device" and set unit as "0"
Under SANA II configuration select "no"
Don't worry about it not detecting your network address, just manually enter your own (my home network assigns 192.168.0.xxx so I used 192.168.0.110).
Enter your subnet mask (probably 255.255.255.0) and your router address (in my case 192.168.0.1)
Enter your Domain Name Server (DNS) - 192.168.0.1 in my case
Enter your Domain Name ("cablerocket.net" in my case).

Reboot your Amiga and check your Trident prefs and you should see your ethernet adapter up and running.  Check Genesis and put the USBASIXETH0 device online if it isn't already.  Open your web browser and start surfing!

I hope this helps.  :-)

OK, I had to make a post from my Amiga using AWeb IISE as I did the announcement from a PC.

A quick question, what is the best web browser to use on the classic Amiga today?

Aweb makes me constantly "OK" each cookie (I can't disable it in the prefs which may be a feature of the SE) and the screen is refreshed each time a new graphic is loaded (for example, to make this post the screen had to refresh once for EACH message icon!).

Cheers.

I would say Ibrowse is the best for AmigaOS 3.x

Cheers guys.  I guess it's time to check the net for Ibrowse.  Is it free or does it need to be registered (can it be registered?)?

I don't blame you.  It really opens up the expansion possibilities of a big box Amiga.

thats great!

as soon as you get some free time, could you try some speed test via FTP or such, between 2 systems onto your LAN?

Thanks!

Sure.  I'll find a big file and download it on a PC and the A4000 and compare the times.

It would certainly be worthwhile.  The ability to still surf AND have USB is a great bonus.

So far everything I've connected to the Deneb has worked:
USB CD ROM (iOmega)
USB DVD+RW (HP model)
USB 3.5" Floppy
USB Ethernet
Memory sticks (Lexar & Sandisk)
2.5"/3.5" IDE/SATA to USB adapter
A2000, A3000, 2 x A1200T, A1200, A4000Tower & Mediator, CD32, VIC-20, C64, C128, C128D, PET 8032, Minimig & ARM, C-One, FPGA Arcade... and AmigaOne X1000.

OK, a rough test to comapre download speeds against my PC on the same network.

I wend to oldversion.com and selected a 6.2MB Firefox download.

Both the PC and Amiga are connected to my cable network via a wireless router, but using cables to the ports and not using a wireless connection.

The PC is an eMachine T6420 Athlon 64 3400+ and is using the onboard nVidia nForce Networking Controller 10/100.  IE used.

The Amiga is an A4000 68040 25MHz using the Trendnet USB2.0 device connected to the Deneb with Genesis.  AWeb II used.

6500352 Bytes

Amiga:  1min 39sec
PC:  21 secs

Now, if anyone has an X-Surf or similar and would like to repeat the test...

I think my internet is slow tonight  :-?
Anyway..
Amiga 4000 060/50Mhz 2+16+128mb ram, mediator with 10/100 netcard and Voodoo 3000..
PC: AMD Sempron 2600+ 1,6Ghz with 512mb ram, onboard graphics card and onboard 10/100 netcard..
I can't tell much about my PC, it's just a cheap office pc.. I did not have a nice A4000 system when I bought it in 2006.
I just had standard A500/600/1200 machines back then :-P

I tried to download the same Firefox that you did.
Amiga: 2min 8sec
PC:  1min 41sec

Then I tried VICE-AROS64-2.0.tar.gz from aminet, 6,3MB..
Amiga: 43sec
PC: 49sec
This was a nice expirence for me :-D

But anyway, I usaly download with about 200kb/s, but it was slower than normal tonight  :-?

Both computers are connected to the same switch.
A1200, Blizzard 030, 2+32MB ram, 4GB CF, pcmcia netcard, Kickstart 3,1
A600, 2MB chip ram+4Mb pcmcia S-RAM, Kickstart 3,1
CD32 - Just for fun  :-D
