I am using OS 3.9, and I will not start using OS4 on my classic amiga.
I discovered that I have four 4MB chips laying around that are suitable for the A4000 motherboard, but are currently empty since I have 96MB ram on the CS PPC(60ns). Should I put this working RAM on the mother board, and up to 118MB, or should I consider it a slow down, and leave it be? What is common practice? |

Put memory in the board.
You could say: "Only 16Mb more... :-/" But if you don't have it, some day you'll need it. Murphy's law. That memory will be only used when the CS memory goes out (filled with something). Then (and only then) the Amiga will crawl.

I agree with rkauer: More memory is always a good thing....
I upgraded my A1200T/'060 to 128MB when I discovered a scene from a LightROM CD that wouldn't render with less

I agree with all of the above. Additionally, in terms of diagnostics, the more features on a system you use the more apt you are to detect a problem before it comes an issue. In this case, if you detect a memory problem, that could be a symptomatic of a potentially larger problem.
For instance, I noticed that I was having USB port problems on a SoYo motherboard, then other ports began to fail. That lead me to the power system on the board which uncovered swollen caps. As with all things, YMMV. I have 16MB on the mobo, 128MB on the CSMKIII. I get a little childish thrill knowing that my system is fully populated. :-) |

If you want to see real crawl, do what I once did - put 4 MB 16bit memory (Oktagon 2008) in addition to 128 MB on CSPPC and 16 MB on MoBo and then fill it...

Then I'll insert the memory.
Only bummer then is that I need to take out all the zorro cards, and unscrew the mediator bus board... Since the motherboard memory sockets are well hidden now ![]() Upside is that I have really good access to almost everything else now, including the CS PPC, and I can remove it with out too much hassle, and soon try out the modded KS chips I've had lying around for ages (3.9 with NO-IDE). |

Just back from a mini-cruise & sampling the Contraband! :-D Tbh arnljot, get another 2 x 32Mb Simms & drop the 2 x 16Mb Simms on the CS. Enter 128mb (that wont show in SysInfo) but does everywhere else & then get the extra ram into the MoBo. All the RAM Addresses in your Miggy are automaticaly prioritised. Accelerator first; Mobo Second; Chip Ram Third; - Unless the specific application Requires Chip Ram/and/or Fast Ram to run. Btw...I have 2 x 32Mb 60ns modules here, aside from the 128Mb already on the card you are negotiating about! ;-)
