Default Going SCSI on My A4000D, have questions...

Hey guys, my SGI Octane2 up and died. I'm tired of fixing it.. so i'm taking the dual 62GB SCSI drives out.

I've got the Cyberstorm MK3 w/ SCSI3 option, so i'd like to set that up to use my 62GB HDD. Do I just need a cable and that's it? Can anyone recommend a cloning software that will allow me to clone my IDE drive to the scsi drive?

I'm sure the A4K will run hot, but does anyone here run SCSI, can they see a noticeable difference beween IDE and SCSI?

Also, probably a rehash here, but will I have the same limitation of 2GB Partitions and a 4GB Max drive size like IDE?

TIA!

with AmigaDOS 3.1 you will unless you get a patched FFS and SCSI driver. Same as on IDE.

cybppc.device is already prepared for 64-bit addressing. You just need a patched FFS v40 (TD64) or FFS v45 (OS3.9).

As to hard drive cloning, just prep partitions on the new drive, open a directory utility (DOpus), put the new empty partition in one window, the old partition in another window, and copy everything over.

The size limitations are from the file system, not the controllers, so they will be the same for the SCSI as they are for your IDE controller, until you upgrade the FFS file system or patch it as noted below (or above depending on your sort choice).

The speed difference should be dramatic between your onboard IDE controller and the SCSI controller on the CyberStormMK3. I don't have any benchmark results to say how much faster, but someone else probably does. I wouldn't be surprised if you see a speed increase over 2 times the read/write of the on board IDE.

Well, if we're pedantic, the size limitations can be from at least 4 sources:
- The controller itself
- The device driver of the controller (#?.device)
- The filesystem
- The applications (choking on large files, or for example ShapeShifter, ReOrg, disk validator tools trashing the RDB if the partition is above the 4GB limit)
+ Additionally the drive itself may impose limitations, these are typically harmless however (you just might not be able to access the full capacity)

CS MK3 SCSI has the first two items covered. It's up to the user to choose the correct filesystem and not use any potentially hazardous apps that might nuke the RDB and/or partitions below 4GB.
