I have an a3000d motherboard here that needs a fat agnus and a denise. The motherboard is marked "REV 6.1 MOD". I have another, bad, motherboard (rev 7.1) with a chip numbered 8273AB in the fat agnus socket and one numbered 8373 in the denise socket. Assuming these parts are good (no way to test other than to try them, I suppose) are they likely to be compatible with the earlier motherboard? Even if they are, do I ideally want newer revisions of these chips?

This Fat Agnus should work because the 8273AB is an A3000 Agnus and supports 2MB Chipmem. AFAIK there are no other Agnus type for the A3000. Basically the pinlayout should also be the same. If there is a different in the "MOD" version, the only thing you could get is a black or perhaps a green screen with flashing power-led.

Cool! Thanks, guys... now I just have to figure out how to get the fat agnus out of the socket without damaging it. i bought a plcc extractor from radio shack but it's worthless as the hooks don't get far enough under the package...
[edit:] Another question - what is the best way to remove the motherboard battery from the board? Would it be preferable to use snips or to just move it about until the leads break? |

I had got this ploblem when i bought my A3000. The super denise 8373 is easy to find but the Agnus 8372"AB" or "B" is hard to find, finally i must buy that in ebay in the States. So while you find one you can fit a 8372A with no jumper modification (I was while) in spite off this agnus is a 1MB in my 3000D only find 512 Kb (there is 2 Mb) but system worked. Finally find a 8372B and all it's ok. and the same is for the denise put an OCS Denise while.

Hmm... thank you all for the advice. I guess I'm off to radio shack to buy a soldering iron and one of these desoldering bulbs.
I haven't touched a soldering iron in years; this should be fun...
