Keep the A3000. It's simply superior.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, according to information here (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=22), the A3000 has 2 types of FAST RAM, ZIP CHIP and DIP.

If my current A3000 is using DIP up to the 4MB, then that's the limit.

If it's using ZIP, I can add another 12MB up to the 16MB maximum.

According to info here (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=164), the A2620 uses ZIP RAM. So I could theoretically take the RAM from there and put it in my A3000 (assuming I'm not currently using DIP RAM - will have to check.)

Am I wrong?

What about that gizmo that (I think) DJBase has made for plugging SIMM's into A3000's?

EDIT: Bingo

Now, I don't have (Or have ever had) a A2000 or A3000, but I'd still say keep the A3000! Just from that scraps that I've read!

I'd sell the A3000 and keep the A2000. I have both myself, and after experimenting expanding both machines then I shelved the A3000 and went with the A2000 due to the larger case which made it easier to work on and add more cards and drives.

I have a similar setup to you, except that I have a 40MHz 68030 in my A2000 which makes it faster than my 25MHz A3000. I've added a Cybervision 643D and I recently bought that same Amber card to display native screen modes on a VGA monitor (and a cheap monitor switcher box to flick between the CV64 and Amber output).

Honestly, unless you've got some Zorro 3 only cards, you'll spend the rest of your Amiga days cursing the A3000 whenever you look at that botched CD ROM drive sitting on your desk while you fondly remember the way it used to mount inside your A3000. :-D

Now if the A3000 had AGA then it would be a different matter...

The Amiga 3000 is considered to be the Best tech machine ever made by commodore.

I'm gonna have to agree with Darrin here, as the A2000 was even considered by Commodore to be its most Professional, Flagship Computer. :-o

But seriously, I've been enjoying upgrading mine as well. There's definitely plenty of room. I've already picked up a Melody sound card, 3.1 ROM, added a DKB Megachip and have a CV64/3D on the way. Still looking for an '040 or '060 accelerator to replace the POS '030 Vector card (which doesn't work fully with 3.1 ROM) -- anyone want to sell me their Wildfire? :-P

Z2 is pretty slow (I'm real curious to see how the CV performs), but I'm hardly after maximum performance with a late 80's computer anyway.

Anyhow, I'd still love to own an A3000... but I think I'd stick with the bigger boxes for more expansive upgrading.

Keep both, find a place at the top of a Cabinet or vertically deeply in a Cabinet ;-)

I have one of each, both expanded considerably and I would have a hard time choosing between them. I think I would regret getting rid of either. They are both excellent machines with each having their own advantages & disadvantages.

Hi,

@Twin,

I would definetly sell the A3000 first since it would bring in more money than that lowly old Amiga 2000, when you gotta sell you have to sell the higher grade stuff in order to get more money, I would populate it with the highest quality components that I had and put it up for auction on ebay. Think of all the money you would get by selling the A3000 compared to the older A2000, besides that hardly anyone would give you much for the A2000, you have to think of the profits that you will be making.

Hoped I shed some light on this subject, its not the item that counts, it is all about the money.

I also have samples of both machines. The 2000 will house more stuff, including the CDRom and will be a better retro choice. The 3000 is 32-bit all the way through and a whole new experience with a PII, but needs a seperate CDRom case.

I'd keep them both, stack them together, and network them. Play to the strengths of both machines and share their resources. Maybe try a keyboard/monitor switcher. OTOH, matching dual monitors would be cool!

Wasn't there an obscure way to network through SCSI? Maybe it was just IBM where the host address could be altered. Can't remember.

I would keep the 3000 if there was no battery damage. The 2000 does seem more durable.

Thanks for the input.

I would really love to keep both, the sad fact of the matter is that I don't have the time to use both.

I already have an A1200/030 which I will never part with, I love it. The other machine (3000 or 2000) will be my 2nd Amiga.

I'm going to struggle to find time to use two machine's let alone three.

I'll probably go with the 3000, even though it has to have an external CD ROM.

Can anyone answer my earlier question regarding RAM from the 2000 processor board in the 3000?

Crazy suggestion, but is there no way that the A3000 board could be fitted into the A2000 case? The A2000 has the mechanical advantage and the A3000 seemingly the technology advantage.
