Default Amiga 4000/040 strange behaviour...

Hi guys,

yesterday I've received my "new" A4000/040 desktop.

At first the computer started normally, after few minutes I tryed to change screen settings just to try the monitor (a commodore 1942) and everything was ok.
Last I tryed a screen mode that I think was not supported by the monitor, but I've clicked on "USE" and not on "SAVE" to be sure I could turn back on a right resolution.

Well from that moment on the Amiga started to behave strange: I had to reset the Amiga but after that it didn't reach the complete load of the workbench because of a software failure.

Another thing, the most strange, is that as soon as i touch/move the mouse my monitor/screen start to flash and lot of little stripes appear (like if the monitor goes out of sync) and the computer crashes.

Now also if I attach another mouse (the A1200 one for example) or another monitor (I thought it was matter of mouse or monitor) the same thing always happens.

If I do not touch the mouse the Amiga reach the full OS loading and I can move by pressing the usual key combo instead of the mouse and the computer seems to work fine...
... but moving the mouse produces a crash!

After this I've removed the battery because I found that there was white/bluish dust around. I've cleaned carefully but I see that some chips (tiny chips)are slightly covered with that dust on their pins.

Anyway the Amiga worked until I started to play with screen res prefs. It's possible that this has nothing to do with all this, I don't know.

Please, anyone has a solution?

Thank you very much in advance

Mauro

Have you tried booting from WB floppy? If this works, maybe a re-install could solve the problems.

I have no idea though what the cause of this problem could be. What screenmode did you select after which the problems occured?

the white dust is dryed battery acid remove as much as u can be carefull not to scratch the mother board . l used meths for this as long drys and leaves no film .

when l have problems with my amiga 1200 with screen modes l boot and hold down both mouse buttons and get eraly startup screen and select
boot with no sartup seqwence and type in the shell on the screen
assign env: ram and then usually l can get into wb enough to delete the screen mode prefs the file screen modes are saved to.
id try reformating the hard drive if you have no luck and putting workbench back on is it workbench 3.0 ?

also before u try this take out what ever in your workbench startup drawer sometimes certian addons can cause crashs well this what found in the past like some tool mangers . just try this.

I don't remember very well, it must be something like A2024...
...or anyway some 15 Khzs creen mode...

...I'm really not sure.

I've tryed to start with the workbench floppy disk. It works but when I move the mouse the screen shows those moving stripes, flickers and the Amiga crashes.

As I told before, It doesn't appear to be a software problem at first...

...maybe. Anyway, starting the system from floppies make the whole thing work but moving the mouse crashes the computer.

Which is the right port for the mouse? The one pointing to me or the one pointing the back of the computer?

Mauro

Boot with no startup-sequence and rename screenmode.prefs -file to screenmode.prefs_BAK for example.

the problem happens also booting with Workbench 3.0 floppy disks.
I can work only avoiding the use of the mouse.

does seem bit strange that mouse whould affect it this way
l havent got my amiga 4000 working yet as need some parts to finish building it . good qwestion about the mouse and joystick ports l should imagine its the one closest to you or the front of the machine . but on the little brother amiga 1200 its the bottom connector. to confuse the issue.
u are using a amiga 4000 keybaord ? u cant just plug in a pc one u need a converter. well thats what l read try it in the other port l dont think it work at all in the wrong one though.

your A4000 is dying. Probably some leaked acid is eating into some traces in the mouse/display area. You should have it checked by Amiga center in France or Castellen in New Zealand.

I think I had the same problem. Check PSU, and especially its connector on motherboard. Tighten the connector "holes" (esp. +5V). A4000 is not getting enough current and mouse/fdd take away some.

edit: er, no, sorry that was different Amiga.
BTW, easy way to bypass screen modes and boot into PAL is to hold the RIGHT mouse button while loading WB.

The mouse port is the closest to the front of the 2 on the left hand side of the 4000D. The one nearest the back is the joystick port.

And is there a reason for the Amiga was running and working fine all the time (1 or 2 hours) until I started to play with screen res settings?

I don't know but I think I'll post some photos of the motherboard as soon as possible so you can look and maybe give me a better opinion.

Yesterday I started the Amiga holding down both the two mouse buttons. After entering into the usual settings screen the problem started to show again, always movine the mouse.
This time there was no workbench or startup-sequence.

Anyway, thank you all very much and wish you a very good Easter

Mauro
