Default Questions questions !

hiya everbody !
Right , had A500 , A1200 years ago then turned to the dark side for work reasons , Micro$oft . :-(

Anyhoo , been given an A1200HD.
I want to demo Bars and Pipes and Music-X to my students to show them how we did it in the old days before Cubase and Pro-Tools !
I've got disc images on a PC and need to transfer them to the A1200.

Been looking on Amigakit and very interested in the Subway .
Does this enable any USB kit to be used ?
ie HD , CDROM , and memory sticks ?

Also what is the lowdown on WHDLoad ?
Would I need more RAM and an accelerator ?
If so , does anyone still make them !
On Amigakit the only thing they list is a jumper !?!?

Cheers,
Willbloke

You need extra RAM for that - amigakit.com have in stock. On the otherhand, if you really want an accelerator, you have to cough up quite a lot of money... where to get one? Ebay.

right , just opened the beastie up.
It's got a Power Computing PC528 card.
Seems to suggest it's 4M with clock and FPU.
The large square socket in empty , is that the FPU or is it for CPU upgrade ?

Never heard of it. :-D

The socket is quite possibly for an FPU, or something else such as a ROM that gets used in other models.

If you are happy with computers in general... boot Workbench, open the Tools drawer, and double-click on ShowConfig, then post here what it tells you.

Right !
Haven't got a mouse , trying to remember how to use an Amiga without a mouse , been a while ...!

Processor CPU68020
Custom chips AA PAL Alice( id= $0023)
AA lisa (id=$ooF8 )

VERS : Kickstart version 39.106 ,exec version 39.47 , disk version 39.29

RAM Node type $A, Attributes $605 (FAST) , at blah blah (4 meg)

RAM Node type $A, Attributes $703 (CHIP)
, at blah blah (~2.0 meg)

Boards
RAM (Unidentified) : Prod=357/0 ($165/$0)
(@ $200000 4MEG Mem )

So I guess it's 4 Meg with RTC and no FPU !

Anyone know if old Motorola Macs would have a relevant FPU ?
Might be able to find one in the junk room .

So anyhoo , is this likely to be man enough to run old games under WHDLoad ?
And is the subway USB the way to go as far as connecting external HDs and CDs ??

Cheers

I believe the OP is referring to one of these ... a Power Computing PC525 issue 1A 4MB (fixed - not expandable) RAM upgrade / expansion for Amiga 1200 computer.

Crap picture I know, but it's the only one I could find

Personally? I'd get a Blizzard or something similar in the realms of an expansion card for your A1200 ... so much more better, faster and expandable. I very much doubt 4MB will be sufficient for your needs IMHO

The big empty socket (top right) is indeed for a PGA style FPU, and the little socket above that is for the corresponding crystal oscillator.

Cool , thanks for the info.

I guess from searching round on 't interwebnet that accelerators ie. Blizzard are like rocking horse manure, so that's probably a non-starter.

To be honest , I'm not looking at spending hundreds on a machine I'll not use that frequently.

As much as I love Amigas , probably got 4 in the loft , I'm really a PC and to a lesser extent a Mac user these days.
When the Amiga came out it blew the doors off PCs at the time .
But the years of development have overtaken the poor old Amiga.

You see I'm a senior tech at a University and we've just started a Music and Audio Technology course.
Based around Cubase on PCs and Pro-tools on Macs.
I wanted to show the kiddies the sort of gear I started on all those years ago.
Spectrum 48K ,Yamaha CX5 MSX , then Amiga 500 using Music-X and Bars and Pipes Pro.
My original 500 with the 590 (?) expansion is now dead , but I've still got the software .
i was given this A1200 by someone in IT services .
It boots and seems to run ok , need to get a mouse though.
But of course I've got no easy way of transferring the software from the PC to the Amiga.

What about the easy ADF compact RAM thingy ?
Will this run on a lowly A1200 :boohoo:

4MB of Fast ram will probably do ok for Bars&Pipes in an A1200.

A Motorola 68881 or 68882 is the same chip, regardless of whether it was in a Mac or Amiga or anything else. You can indeed source processors and coprocessors that way, but most Macs only used relatively slow fpu.

Amiga can read and write 720KB MSDOS floppies using CrossDOS. Compress things into LHA (or other) archives for transfer and you get fewer 8.3 filename difficulties.

For moving the pointer without a mouse... Hold down the right Amiga key, and use the cursor arrows (with shift makes it go faster) and press the left and right Alt keys to act as mouse buttons.

If you find a 50MHz PGA 68882 please send it to me. :-D

I do remember how to run without a mouse thanks meega !
Took a while.

Funny you should say about an FPU , I'm presently clearing out a store with old Macs , did a search and found that a Mac SE had the FPU i wanted , got all excited when I found one , stripped it but it's the wrong one , only the SE30 had the 68882 :-(

Have found a couple of 68040 cpus though if I ever find a dead accelerator card

Perhaps two months ago it was true, but now you can use subway with at least a 68000 at 7.14Mhz and 100Ko of RAM.
(See ANAIIS on aminet)
Still in dev, but massstorage support will come after tricky bugs fix.
