An LCD-TV question
« on: January 11, 2008, 01:37:31 PM »
Seems to be a lot of LCD-TV and scandoubler related questions going on these days. Nevertheless, I have another one.

So I'm extremely tempted to grab a Samsung SyncMaster 741MP, which is a 17" monitor with TV-tuner and SCART connector. But I'm getting a little confused when looking at its specs. It's reported at 56-75 Hz vertical sync. Now, since I'm living in a PAL country, I'm a little surprised it doesn't go down to 50Hz? Do these monitors/TV's do some sort of upsampling?

The rated vertical sync is for the VGA input and has nothing to do with the rca/s-video inputs.

Looks like a reasonable choice for an Amiga screen. Presuming that's 1280X1024 @ 75Hz for the VGA it should serve you well.
I agree with the above also, the quoted V Sync will only refer to the VGA, your SCART input will work fine. :-D

@both

Thanks both of you. I expected as much, but I just hate wasting money on something that doesn't end up doing what I expected.

Yeah, I think that monitor will be nice for an Amiga. If I get some graphics card in the future, it'll act as a monitor switcher as well.

Us PAL users are lucky to have the SCART connector, the fellow Amigans with NTSC don't have that (they use BNC connectors I believe, and the signal is incompatible with RGB)

Hmm, more and more I get the urge to buy an Amiga, but in the Netherlands, good ones are rare and expensive. And don't even think of big box Amiga's

AmigaKit has a good stock of A1200's, and at a decent price I think. Of course you'd still have to shell out for an accelerator card if you want that, and that may very well cost as much as the A1200. Or more.

I'm afraid the shipping costs are going to be steep, if I make a rough estimation I'll end up paying around €450/340GBP/$665 and that's way too expensive.

I paid ~£143 incl. shipping for A1200 + 40GB HD + PCMCIA Ethernet card. Did your estimate include tower, mediator, etc?

No matter. It's off-topic really.

Nope, A1200 build to order w/ new old stock A1200, os3.9, harddrive etc.

But you are right, way offtopic.

Hi Caius

I have two Syncmaster 741MP's(741MPi?) ;)) on my desk, the main one is running off the Cybervision643D in my A1200 @ 1280x1024.  The other I use as a video monitor for my vlab, as a tv and eventually it will be used as a monitor for my other A1200 or the A4000.  I use the "main" 741MP with the TV out of the A1200 and the s-video with my CD32 as well.

Very happy with the set up :D

Good to hear you're happy with it Pertinax, since it's the cheapest Monitor/TV solution I've found. At least where I live.
