Default The Usage of SAM440 (Minimig and then what?)

A-Cube states that the FPGA (LatticeXP) on the SAM440 will be sufficient to emulate the Amiga Chipset

Quote:
it's possible to use the FPGA to emulate, in hardware, the Amiga chipset, like it's done on the Minimig. It would be sufficient to build a card with a 68000 compatible processor, some memory and keyboard, mouse and monitor connectors to get full compatibility with older software.
(See http://www.sam440.com/eng/images/Bitplane15.pdf)

But will it also be able to run some version of the Minimig code?

And since Amiga Inc won't allow OS4 Classic to be run on the SAM, what could it be used amiga-wise for now?

It do cost €460 in it's minimal configuration.

BUMP

Some things I've seen elsewhere on the subject in this forum so far.

Is Sam shipping? Does it run Linux?

Yep! According to Acube Systems website Sam is available. I'll guess if you want to buy one you'll have to buy it directly from Acube.

Sam runs a Linux distro called CRUX PPC. There is a news article about it on the CRUX PPC website.

Well they have to make money with something and selling the board to a couple amiga users that would run OS4 on it sure was never the one and only businessplan. More like a nice side effect so nothing to wonder about here at all.

Nice work AROS folks!
As for a geek machine, the FPGA on SAM adds to it's repertoire a whole new angle. Chipsets? maybe through the FPGA we could get something wothwhile, we've seen a lot of great FPGA projects recently with Minimig et al.
I'd still choose SAM over Efika. :-D

It's not of much use, even with OS4 support. It's too expensive . . . and too slow, no cache, etc. . . Now if the price were less, with a 1.2 GHz cpu (with cache) that would be 8-) Even at the 667 mark with an L2 cache would be better, but the price is still too high. :-(

But it is what it is . . . :-o

Petty. I liked the concept whith the potential for a built in Minimig for backward compatibility.

My Mac Mini was 320€, and it included 512MB ram, 80GB HDD, cd-rw/dvd-rom combo drive, bluetooth and wlan. The seller also included a remote controller (useful when using the things as jukebox).

With small mod it now runs the 7447B at 1.58GHz, with altivec and stuff.

It's quite hard to beat that.
