Starting an unofficial Classic AmigaOS 4 FAQ
« on: December 20, 2007, 12:51:33 PM »
I am thinking of starting an unofficial AmigaOS 4 for Classics FAQ on my website.

If you have any ideas or Q&A entries you have, can you reply here so I add them to the web site.

The AmigaOS 3.9 FAQ can be found here:
http://www.gregdonner.org/os39faq/os39faq.html

My website is:

Q: When will it run on Macshitosh?
A: Never.

on a serious note, you should probably put requirements first..
Better sorry than worry.

Great idea mate. I think both of your links are very useful 8-)

OS4 question:-

How do I get my ToolsDaemon to work in OS4?

(I've put the usual files from my OS3.9 system into S, L, Prefs and WBStartup but OS4 just hangs when I attempt to use  it)

ToolsDaemon is a hack of a program and not really a WB friendly program. Have you tries ToolManager instead or Dopus Megallan?

Ihave no idea what is included with AmigaOS 4 so I cannot confirm that.

Has any one got a directory listing of what is on the CD?

Here's a grab of DirectoryOpus4 (OS4 version :-D) showing the contents of the OS4 CD. No sign of ToolsDaemon anywhere in there....

Just to clarify exactly what I am looking for, this screengrab shows the 4 components of the ToolsDaemon that has worked brilliantly in OS3.9....

The original ToolsDaemon gave one extra menu called 'Utils'. By some fluke I was able to add more titles which went right across the top of the Workbench screen. Hence, I could launch many more progs and utils without even having to open up a partition.

Here is one of my 'ToolsDaemon.menu' files:-

I have ToolsDaemon working perfectly on my  Amiga1 under OS4. It is Toolsdaemon version 2.1b ... I seem to recall previous versions not working properly. I have several hundred additional menu items listed in my toolsdaemon config file.... not sure why it wouldn't work with classic.

As the maintainer of a FAQ on OS4, I think you should buy OS4.

Hmmm..... I just remembered how I got ToolsDaemon to work after I upgraded form OS3.5 to OS3.9. I had to hold down the right mouse button and select 'Backdrop' from the heading 'Workbench' at the top left of the screen. After which ToolsDaemon would work ok. I just did the same for OS4 and ToolsDaemon worked on that too :-)

(not the ideal solution though :inquisitive:)

Back then I eventually managed to get a patch for ToolsDaemon in OS3.9, so now I just need one for OS4 (or an OS4 specific version of  ToolsDaemon)

@  SCabit

Would you have a link to version 2.1b please as I can't see it here:-

No!  Those who benefit from the FAQ should pitch in and buy it for him!

Oh, and here's the link for 2.1b.

That's what it was. 2.1b was an arrexx version or something that was no longer a hack, as of 3.9 (I don't have my Amithlon box up anymore). You can use a trick menu editor that was, IMO  way nicer than the original.

Do you mean like being able to right click anywhere on the screen to get a menu? You can do this in OS4 but with ToolsDaemon installed as well you have access to all those menus too.

@ AMC258

Thanks mate, but that link goes to 'ToolsDaemon21a.lha'. Hope you get your OS4 soon if you haven't already got it.

"4. Can I use my PCI Expansion boards?

Yes, you can use expension boards such as the Mediator, Prometheus, Infinitive and RBM Onboard expanson cards. There are limitations with some peripherals
which use DMA to access memory and onboard cache which will not work on Amiga OS 4. "

So is there any possibility to hack AOS4 to use DMA? By AOS3 drivers or something??? Doesn't it mean then lack of PCI-sound? :-?
I could save Aeon, but she will not come. Who will save me?
