LAST VOODOO 5 AGP capable Intel mainboard socket?
« on: July 28, 2007, 08:01:54 PM »
Hi guys,

I'm just building up some nice custom hardware with my own built OS. I would like to use an Intel mainboard and (out of couriosity) a Voodoo 5 5500AGP for some prototyping work. Does anyone of you know the latest Intel socket which used to have AGP 2x/4x with 3.3volts?

And BTW: Before anyone mentions AMD CPUs: I can't use them,as they aren't supported by the OS' Kernel actually.

Well, Piru, you did better than I did... and in my PC I've got an Intel mainboard with a 4x AGP slot.

What does "Intel socket" mean?

You want to know what is the latest CPU socket type that supports AGP at 3.3volts? (That question doesn't make sense: CPU sockets and AGP support are in no way related)

Ah,yes. Now I know what you mean. Actually I want to know which was the last Intel socket using AGP 2x. I can't imagine there are socket 775 mainboards out there, that have AGP 2x 3.3v Slots on them so there must be a last generation of sockets/mainboards using them.

Hmm, probably the last chipset might be the i845D (2nd gen socket 478 boards) - but read yourself.

PS: must probably be i845E - i mean the one supporting DDR RAM

Yeah, something at a German hardware forum wrote the same. Thank god I'm familiar with the German language.

How about AGP-PCI or AGP-PCIE bridge?

I don't know how backwards-compatible AGP 8x slots are, but the Intel 865 chipset support both socket 775 and AGP.

I switched to SiS chipsets for the AGP 8x period, and the 661FX is an excellent chipset with good compatability with older cards, if you're not picky about the manufacturer.

No,badly AGP 8x won't work. At worst it can destroy the mainboard in only a few seconds when equipped with a AGP 2x graphicscard.

@Piru

Good idea. But as I know it's hard to get a AGP-PCIe bridge. I have a Geforce 7 Card with a PCIe-AGP bridge and this one is darn expensive and hard to find.

Ok,just found a nice list. Pentium 4 mainboards aren't capable of equipping AGP 2x cards properly. There are only some universal AGP slots but as I'm informed these aren't that save anyway. So looks like I'll stick to a small Pentium 3 Mainboard (hopefully there are some which fit into desktop cases like a modified Amiga 1000 Desktop)and rewrite the kernel of my os, as the Pentium 3 isn't capable of SSE2 and thats exactly what the OS will stop from booting in it's previous state.

BTW: If anyone is interested in this, here is the list:

That's not quite right, as my D845 board with P4 supports AGP 1x/2x/4x BUT at 1.5V - the 3.3V AGP was considered by Intel to be a legacy device, and that was five years ago!

Don't rely on Wiki, Intel do have a website of their own.

Yeah, but if it's only at 1,5V that won't make a difference thought. The Voodoo 5 5500 needs (as about 2 third of all AGP 2x cards) an 3.3V AGP 2x slot.
