A3000UX Agnus replacement
« on: July 02, 2007, 06:53:18 AM »
Hi Folks,

My A3000UX has a busted Agnus & I have searched the forums and cannot for the life of me find a definite answer to my question. Will a 2Mb 8375 390544-01 PAL Agnus work in an A3000 ? I have been told that they are pin compatible but it's difficult to confirm this as there is alot of confusion over the different types and revisions.

I am currently using an 8372A temporarily until I get it all sorted out.

C='s numbering never was very logical - an 8375 usually belongs to an A500+ or 600, but you never know...
Maybe the Agnus article in German Wikipedia is of help; it's got the pinouts of all variants.

I don't think I'm going to risk it.

I just spent $ restoring my A3000 and repaired a couple of tracks to get the RTC going again, the last thing I want to do is damage it. Hopefully an 318069-03 will turn up on ebay  if I'm lucky :)

The 8375 is most definitely a A500+/600 variant and is not likely to work in an A3k.

I do have a bunch of Amiga chips myself that I don't need & will put them up on ebay soon. I have several 68000 cpu's, a 68010,  denise, paula, 8372A and some chips only found in the CDTV.

ebay

The A3000 in the link above came with or at least has an 8375B 318069-03

# A 3000, B2 Board REV 9/03
# 2 MB Chip RAM, 16 MB Fast RAM (mit PC DIMM Adapter)
# Denise 8373R4PD
# Fat Agnus 8375B
# 390538-03 51 Amber
# 2 x CIA 8520A-1
# 390540-02 41 Fat Gary
# Paula 8364R7
# 390537-02 81 Super DMAC
# WD33C93A-PL 00-04 9109 (SCSI)
# 68030 25 MHz
# 1 x DD Floppy disk
# 850 MB Quantum Trailblazer Festplatte
# Kickstart 3.1
# Original Amiga 3000 Handbüchern und Amiga Vision
# Original Commodore 3 Tasten Microschalter Maus

I believe this Agnus should be pin compatible with 8372B, I remember reading some info that confirmed it Re: A2k 2Mb chip ram hack.

The required pinout in an A3k is quite unique, and I just wanted to point out that an 8375 is usually intended for A500+/600, which require a different pinout. 2 MB chip RAM hacks for A500/2000 also use the latter version.

Unfortunately C=/CSG made a pretty mess in nomenclature, there's no known method to decode the chip/part numbers to the specific version.

Pin 42 might give a clue to which exact version a specific Agnus is: the A3k version runs GND/Vss, the A500+/600 version has DRA0 (not GND) there. I've not been able to verify this theory on real chips however.
