Default Keys for A4000 key lock

Are the keys for the A4000 key lock unique? I want to use mine to toggle write enable on my kickflash but no longer have the key. If it comes to it I know I could take the lock out and replace it with a switch, but if the keys are all identical and I can find one then I would rather use that.

The lock is a standard PC-style keylock just like those you find on old 386, 486s. I managed to find a one that fits perfectly from an old 386 tower's keylock, it's exactly the same.

They can vary in size (diameter) though. I'll measure the key I have, if you like. No idea where you'll be able to find them though, sorry!

Oh ok, so if I can find an old tower with the lock and key then I can just replace the whole thing? That's good. In fact I think Maplin sell the lock and key combination so if that's the same diameter I will just replace it.

Thanks - replacing the lock for another lock didn't even cross my mind

Actually, that's not what I was saying, and I worded it wrong - HOWEVER it's a great idea! Hah, that never crossed my mind either.

I was talking about the key, I nicked a key from a 386's lock and it fits in my original A4000 lock.

But yeah! I think the locks themselves might all be the same size. And there's nothing to them really, it's just an on-off switch so you should be sorted if you can source a complete lock and key.

So any key will fit any lock? Is that what you mean? Failing that I have found these but I'm not sure whether they will fit.

I'm fairly sure that the diameter of the key is all that matters really. It's a round hollow barrel with a little outward pointing notch - that's what actually turns the lock once inserted.

I know where one is, see my old post

Anyway, I'll check to see if other cylinder lock keys work in an A4000. A lot of removable drive trays come with that type of lock.

There may be pins pushed/not pushed by the notches in the outside of the barrel. The A4000 key on my keyring is similar to yours but 2 less notches. In the pic key2.jpg mine only has the top 2 notches.

Update:
I just tried a cylinder key that had no notches at all and it does not work in A4000 lock. Although given a small file and about 3 minutes I think it would work

I might have the barrel and keys from my old A4000 up in the loft, I will check over the weekend and if I have, you can have it.

I have just been to Maplin and bought a CJ92. This fits in the hole on the front of the A4000 perfectly. The only problem is that it sticks out further than the original one. But at least now I can write protect/enable my KickFlash by turning the key :-D
