Default Windows XP

Ok all, this is where I don`t have a clue.
I use Windows 2000 Pro legal as in genuine serial number.
And I have a copy of Windows XP pro (not so legal)

Now my wife has a genuine Windows XP home edition and so far it has been used 3 times, this means she can not use it again as it is the type that means 3 times is the limit.
Now there is another version of Windows XP that you can use as many times as you like on your own machine more than 3(not letting any one else use it)

What type is that?
I simple don`t understand simple as that.

TIA,

Mike.

I believe you can just call the activation phone and they will sort that out for you. Just explain that you did a reinstall due to problems and also say it is the same box if they ask.

I myself have found that it varies. I've used a serial a couple of times and had to call in. I've used a serial once, then done a major hardware upgrade to the system it was in, had to re-register, and was told I had to call in. I've used it afterward, and had internet registration work just fine...!

So I guess "YMMV".

I agree it seems to have a mind of its own. I have a copy of xp pro that i have used several times on different macchines , just have to ring up for a new activation number.

They have strated grilling you a lot more these days about how many macchines you have it running on etc. Just one guv.

I had also heard that with service pack 2 (oem versions) that would not let you activate if compleete new system , but in last few days I have installed medica centre edition with service pack 2 bulit in oem version on two totally different machines both connected to the net and both activated over the net, so go figure

It's XP Professional with a Corporate key. This version does not require activation so in theory you can install it on as many different machines as you want.

@Motorillin

Yes thats the one, I could not think of it, I knew there was one version and thats it.

Thanks for that, as for my wife she can phone the phone activation and they can help her that way if she ever needs a hardware upgrade or to reformat the PC.

But for me I shall try to get a corporate version.
:-)

I believe they key i am talking about is meant to be used for training purposes, maybe it will get black listed, but they seem to be taking their time about it.

nobody has pointed anybody to any sites, or told them how to circumvent anything. I believe this discussion is well withing the bounds of the T & C and posting guidelines.

We have mearly pointed out that these things exist

windows genuine disc re-installation.
you can install upto 3 times in 150 days.
if you need to do it more than this in the 150 day period then you have to phone ms for an activation key code.

the corporate version is when you dont have a legal copy,and you take it to your computer shop to have it reinstalled, usualy costs between £25 > £50.
but you wont be able to have the updates,as said before ms declares this as an illegal copy, but there was a dispute a few months back about ms letting these people have the updates,as they have paid there computer shop for it,even though it is a generic key code, they pay ms for a volume licence, or called something simmilar.

@twizzle,
Ahhh now is more clear to me, its a bit small print in many ways.

But I have a better understanding of it now.

Windows xp legal way after third activation.:

If the reason of the reinstall is due to bad hardware. For example your hdd died. Then call your local m$ hotline and explain the situation. They will give you a new key.

Of course they will not check if your hdd really died. :-D
