Is it possible to add a small amount of electronics, set a jumper, or whatever, to allow the Amiga 600 to have a true .5Mb fast and .5mb chip ram, as opposed to the factory 1mb chip ram configuration?

Nope.....
It might be possible (with lots of hacking) to get 512k of Ranger-MEM, but I have no idea how that should work.

For true fast RAM you'd need to add a RAM controller.
A rather easy way to fake this in software is to allocate the upper 512 KB chip and re-add them with the MEMF_FAST instead of the MEMF_CHIP flag set. A bit like Fakemem on Aminet. |

Have a look for fakemem on Aminet which will do it for you in software.

Why do you want to do that? You can do alot of more with a amiga with 1meg of chip than with only 0.5megs chip, since it is used for graphics and audio memory.
Why not just add a seperate memory addon for fast ram? |

Like I keep saying, better to have slow RAM in the PCMCIA slot than none at all.

Why do I want to do this? I am asking this, to see if it possible to have an A600 that is equivalent to an A500 for compatibility with old games, demos and so on. That means for the programs that don't work with 1mb of chip, but instead only work with .5mb chip/.5mb fast. If it is easily switchable, then I have the best of both worlds. This combined with a 1.3/2.x switcher and an ide killer, I was thinking would give me this compatibility. I was asking if it can be done through hardware, as I thought that a software patch would not give the same compatibility as a hardware patch. Correct? Or will there be no compatibility differences between a software patch and a hardware mod?
If it is not possible, then I'll forget about the idea. |

Hello Astral,
I honestly believe that an A500 itself is the way to go. Use the machine you already have for things that it can do that the older ones can't, and obtain an old machine for those occasions when the need for that vintage experience becomes overwhelming. But do investigate software workarounds.
