Hello all, I have posted many times about probs. with my
A1200T systems before, but this is very strange... OK, just recently I DL'd MakeCD and used the free key made available, with my LiteOn DVD-R drive. (from the box: DVD+-R 20x, CD-R 48x, CD-RW 43x, CD-ROM 48x) I have burned about 5 CD-r's sucessfully with this drive, mostly HD backups, and one VCD disc that took hours to do. OK, from the minute I booted up the machine with this drive in, my HD light was on permanently, whether I was actually using the HD or not...odd. Boot time was a bit slower, the drive made some noticeable noise on cold boot-up when it moved the laser assy. but no probs.... OK, earlier today I cold-boot, and go online with Genesis/AWeb_APL, I got a checksum error on the partition that I have my Cache on for Aweb, ... no biggie, it's happened before, I asked here in the forums about it... BUT, this time when I tried to reboot, so I could re-format the partition, and copy it back from my backup....my system froze on a black screen, I left it for 15 minutes, nothing...I tried everything I could think of, finally just unplugged the burner's IDE cable, and disabled the mounting of CD0: on my boot floppy, eventually I got to a semi-working Workbench. I now have my original Teac CD-ROM 40x drive installed now, I have little trouble, the HD is only on when I actually USE the HD, but I have no burner.... ANYone have any idea what's going on here?? Could the DVD burner have somehow prevented or interfered with the HD? Usually, if something bad happens during boot-up, I can plainly hear my IDE drive go crazy, (I think trying to validate the drive?) but when the DVD burner was connected, NOTHING happened, no sound, just black screen... My Specs: A1200 Power Tower P5 '060/50MHz DCE 1230 SCSI module,128MB Fast, OS3.9 w/BB1&2, 8.5 IDE HD, 100MB Zip, 2.1GB SCSI HD.

Do you use an IDE burner? Some drives make the hd light permanently on. Not big deal.
That's a strange behaviour. Try to change your burner for another one, even a DVD-RW one (bigger caches=less CPU load).:-D If it is a SCSI one, I can't give you a hint. :-(

Thanks for the ideas....It's an IDE burner, BTW. I don't want to spend any more money for a burner that may or may not work, I guess I may have to take the 'plain' CD-R/RW drive from my PC, and try with that. This drive that's giving me probs. is a DVD-R/RW, by the way, but I have no idea about the buffer. I now have my old TEAC 40x CD-ROM installed for 2 days, after re-formatting the partition that had errors, everything is fine....HD light is only on when it should be....
Grrr, really frustrating, I only bought this particular drive because it had a beige face plate to match my A1200T!

You may check your PSU.
Some DVD/CDRW draw too much load on +5V output... which goes under 4.86v (the unstability is guaranted).
