Help on my Amiga 600 !!
« on: April 11, 2007, 01:51:12 AM »
I just bought a supposed "working" Amiga 600 (no hard drive).  I turn it on and get the power light and the CAPS LOCK LIGHT STAY ON - NO BLINKING.  Nothing in the expansion slot on the bottom and I reseated the ROM.  What is wrong with this machine?!!

Help Please!

It is dead and needs to be repaired.  Send it to Amiga Center in France.  I had two like that and Jean fixed them right up!!

the problem is leaking capacitors. they need to be replaced. you don't have to send it to all the way to france though. probably a local electronic repair can do the job for you.

Hi,

Your plea for help does not give enough information,
the symptoms as described could indicate a poorly psu unit, to a broken rom chip. Please re-describe the problem and indicate the set up you are using and what you can see visually occurs on the screen.

Hello,
I get no video signal / black screen.  I tried using a standard Power Supply as well as a BIGFOOT Power supply and there is no change.  The screen is black.  The power supplies work perfectly.  The caps lock light stays on.  I remove the keyboard ribbon and reinstall - same results.  I removed the 2.05 ROM and put a 2.04 in - same results.  The only thing I have not done is to replace the floppy drive.  I took the keyboard apart and see that it is NOT like the A500 keyboard which has a circuitboard so I do not see how it could be the keyboard skin.

Is this indeed dead?  Should I buy a 3.1 ROM to try it? Should I try a floppy drive from my 1200?

If I take this to an electronics store - what exactly do I say?

Just go to a local electronics repair store before you send it to france, there is many things that can be easily measured and repaired, but remember to take your PSU with you. Im working in a local electronics repair store here in Finland and i have repaired many kinds of strange devices here..

Hi,

Do an inspection of the motherboard, look for any liquid, brown/yellow in colour. If you see any, an electrolytic capacitor has probably gone. Also look for any liquid coming out of a capacitor.

Check the board in general, do things look clean and un-damaged?

Compare your motherboard to the pictures on the Big book of Amiga Hardware here

Check the floppy drive cable is the right way round and try disconnecting it.

HTH,

Ian

Put the 2.05 ROM back in the machine that it was designed for.

Hi,

Sounds like a busted rom chip to me, you can pick up a replacement rom on ebay, but go for the one to add a hard drive, the 2.04 version rom will not work on an A600, cost should be at most £10. Other's suggestions regarding the motherboard seem unfounded as there is power, as indicated by the power and drive leds', check also floppy cable is properly attached at both ends. If you retry the original rom chip make sure that no legs are bent or broken and everything seats correctly into the socket before powering up the motherboard.
