Default What's the A500 14Mhz hack?

Anyone ever heard about the A500 14Mhz hack? This appears to be some home-made hardware mod using a 14MHz 68000... Has anybody done this to his/her A500?

I'm looking for more info on this. Is it possible to explain to a dummy?

Thanks

pretty much a waste of time...

no seriously, you'd be better off just getting a proper A500 accelerator, even Dave Haynie recommended not doing the hack for it likely would screw up the timing of other motherboard components.

OK, now I know I won't invest in a 14MHz MC68000

Thanks!

Interesting considering it doesn't affect motherboard timing at all. Only the CPU clock is doubled.

It does affect some buggy code that uses fixed cpu timing loops as delay (such as very old 68000 only games). It should be noted however that these games break with 020+ anyway.

If your trying to stay with 16-bit accelerators, ICD's AdSpeed (14 Mhz ) and Supra's Turbo 28 (28 Mhz ) are much better. They both include on-board cache. If you have some fast ram installed, you get nearly double or quadrouple performance respectively. Without fast ram, all 3 options are a waste of time.

I did said 14mhz hack years ago. From memory it didn't take long before I removed it. It worked well for only a few things, ultimately it made the computer (A500) very unstable.
Don't bother!

OK, thanks.

Now I've started investigating old hardware-selling online shops, eBay, browsing quite a few Google result pages trying to find an AdSpeed for sale... and that doesn't look good. It even seems to be a R.A.R.E. item. No?

Anyone heard of such a thing for sale over the Great Web?

There was a fellow selling the AdSpeed (and other ICD products) on ebay last year, but for whatever reason his account has been closed. (He didn't have the best ebay record, IIRC.) I *almost* bought from the guy, in retrospect I'm glad I did not.

Anyhow, A500 accelerators are a bit on the rare side, usually expensive, too. German ebay may be a good bet. ICD still has a website, it's a long shot but you could try emailing them.

EDIT -- My understanding is there was someone working on an A500 accelerator, can't recall who though. (Jens maybe?) There was a big thread about it here a while back.
