A4000T's IDE compatibility woes...
« on: March 26, 2007, 05:38:45 PM »
I got this 120GB Seagate hd that works well on the PC but fails miserably on the A4000T. Jumper is set correctly(master, slave off). An old 120MB hd I have lying around works like a charm on the A4000T, so it's not a problem with the controler.
I remember some threads about something similar a while ago, but can't find them anymore, is this a known problem with some hd's or it should work ?

Ebay can be your friend, if you're lucky and know the art of sniping you can get one for 50% or less of the retail price...ask Keropi  ;-)

The AMIGA IDE port is just that...

the *ORIGINAL* IDE specification.  So, the AMIGA port does not support EIDE / ATA.  If the IDE hard drive you are trying to use does not support a fallback mode to the original specification (many no longer do) then you are out of luck.

There are some compatibility issues with the OS3.9+BB2 scsi.device which myself and others have experienced, see this thread.
Sounds like yours might be a bit different though??  Sometimes I've seen weird things work, like having no jumper installed on certain drives (neither master or slave selected).  Might be worth a try?

There is a recent version of SFS who have problems not with scsi.device, but with IDEFix97 (bult-in OS3.9 too).

Could be a hint, download last SFS version and try again.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

@Castellen
Trying to do a basic install from zero, so AOS3.1 with 40.70 Roms only (using the Install floppy). Didn't make any difference without jumper, so maybe it's the HD wich doesn't have IDE0 fallback mode or something (as suggested above). I could try it on an A4000D but don't fell like disassembling it yet again. And I've already ordered an Acard scsi2ide bridge meanwhile anyway :-)

@Rkauer
Not using SFS (yet, see above...).

Cheers

I had a similar issue with a 40GB drive in a 4000T where the drive wouldn't get recognized. I took an 80 conduter cable and drilled out the plugged hole in the connector at each end and tried it again. The drive worked like a charm.

Might be worth a try if you have an 80 conductor cable laying around.
