Samsung 710MP LCD TV / monitor
« on: March 19, 2007, 11:54:10 PM »
Recently spotted an ok deal on this LCD screen from Wooly's, had some spare readies, so I splashed out thinking it was cheaper than a scan doubler and would do me for displaying my 1200t's productivity modes and 15khz untill I get my voodoo sorted for my newly arrived mediator (cheers motorollin :-) ! ).

Unfortunately though the amiga display seems to be offset low to the right.

Now I can fix the 15khz modes in workbench using the overscan prefs but my PPC card's vga boot and some of the productivity modes will not adjust far enough to view the whole screen, and games / demos that use 15khz still display offset to the bottom right and I cannot for the life of me find any controls for adjusting the display position on the monitor itself (or in it's osd).

Just wondering if anybody else had tried this screen or had any suggestions on how to shift the display (other than take it back and try another model all together)  ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

I had eaxctly the same problem with a SCART->VGA converter box. I think the Amiga's RGB output is not quite SCART compliant, so some screens just won't work properly with it. If you have a look in my gallery you will find a screen which works perfectly with the Amiga's RGB output and also has a VGA input for Voodoo screenmodes.

Note that you will still need a 15KHz screen when you get your Mediator and Voodoo set up, as 15KHz screens won't display on the Voodoo unless the software works with ModePro.

I have no problem with scart-rgb adpter. I used on my a500 and a1200. Maybe your problem is the cable itself.

At the moment I have a combination of RGB -> VGA and RF connecting my miggy to the lcd - I'm waiting for my scart cable to arrive.

I have 13days left to decide whether I'm returning this monitor or not so I'll wait till the scart arrives and see if it fixes things for the 15Khz modes but I was rather dismayed that the productivity mode displays were offset and  unadjustable.

Is the lack of display positioning conrtols normal for an LCD TV?

Most LCD monitors I've come across at work have the standard PC type screen adjustment controls so I kind of expected a samsung "TV/Monitor" to have them too.

I had a 711MP and an Amiga RGB-SCART cable which worked fine out of the box.

Maybe it doesn't like the composite signal. Would be interested to hear whether it works with the SCART cable. Regarding the positioning controls, well I don't know what's normal for LCD TVs, but my screen has them.

Hello,

mind if I make you a question:
can your Samsung 710MP work at 15khz ?
Because actually I am looking a monitor able to work at low frequencies but do not know if they are on the market!
May you give me any advice I would be grateful!
thanks

Thaks for your input guys but it's a moot point now, my SCART cable arrived and it did seem to fix the positioning (for TV modes) but for some reason all colours with a red value greater than 128 come out a horrible shade of orange / yellow through the scart connection.

Colours were fine through vga & rf so I know the monitor can handle the colour range, I then tried the cable with another scart telly I have and the colours were fine on it so I know the cable and my miggy aren't the source of the problem.

Tried various adjustments on the LCD but nothing changed the wierd colours so the screen's going back to the shop. (unless anyone has any simple ideas I've missed for sorting it ?)

Shame really as the screen was a bit of a bargain at £150.

Daniele:
It does handle 15khz through RF, scart, svhs and composite but not through the vga input.

Anyone got any suggestions for an alternative in the same kind of price bracket, 15" - 17"?

(I'd go for motorollin's one but I haven't got an asda within 70 miles of me and I can't find that model online anywhere :-( )

It might be a faulty SCART input on the screen, so a replacement might work better. If it's still the same then you'll have to shop around for a different screen. Dual (the brand of my screen) is actually unique to ASDA. I've tried to find out the actual manufacturer but I can't find out anywhere :-(

Hi!

A half year ago I tested a close relative of your monitor, Samsung 711MP. Basically, it's a 17" LCD TV. It has composite, S-video and SCART RGB alongside DVI VGA connector. TV-tuner part is really bad (not important in this story), but unfortunatelly same goes for AD converter. I took composite out from A520 and tried AMIGA RGB with standard RGB-SCART cable. Even with great difference in signal nature which is obvious in terms of color definition or bleeding, pixel discrimination and ghost shaddowing, I was more than dissapointed. Even with 15Khz RGB feed, the image had a lot of noise, geometry wasn't perfect since no image adjusting was available. Samsung was saving on AD sampler using some pre-2000 9-converter or worse.

A friend of mine told me that SM741MP could do better since Samsung remained strong in offering tuner box in this class of LCD's.

The 710MP is a VGA monitor with TV capabilities (ie it's primarily a VGA monitor, but also lets you watch TV).
Hence it most likely will have lower quality TV parts than the opposite combination,
A LCD TV with a VGA input (primarily a TV, that also allows you to hook up a computer).

My 3 year old Samsung 17" TV showed excellent pictures on the RGB scart input, and it even did a pretty good SuperHiRes interlaced on the Svideo input from my CD32.

Anyway, that would be my opinion.
