Default Smaller PSU in A4000

My A4000 is really cramped, and between the drives and the PSU there's a mass of crushed cables. I'd like to replace the PSU with a physically smaller one. I'm thinking of opening up the metal casing of the existing PSU and gutting it, then removing the front of it, which will mean I can tuck wires inside it. I'll then build a smaller PSU inside the casing.

Has anyone attempted anything like this who could offer me any advice? Like adapting an ATX PSU to work with the A4000 and doing the case modifications.

AmigaKit sells an ATX PSU adapter. I bought a micro ATX power supply to pair with it, and voila. Better power, less heat, and more space.

BEWARE!!!
BEWARE!!!
BEWARE!!!
remember my posts about amiga crashing? guess what! 90% of mATX psu's CANNOT DELIVER sufficient +5v current, so amigas crash.
only mATX fit on the 4000D case , so BEWARE. don't get fooled with watt ratings, they are totally crap. I have tried 250/300/350W mATX psu's with NO success.
...and in the end I still use the normal 4000D psu...

if you find a good psu, look HERE for some modding ideas!

Hmm that doesn't sound too good. So what do we do when our A4000 PSUs start to fail? :-(

I have had good results with my ATX adaptation. After using the ATX adapter and having nothing but problems I tried this:

ATX poewer supplies have plenty of power the issue is that all ATX power supplies use 18g or 16g wire and that not sufficent to power the +5 volt current draw. The best thing to do is take two of the +5v lines from the ATX and tie them to the same pin on the Amiga PS plug and do not use the ATX to amiga adapter as the connections also cause issues. This issue is solved by physically cuting the wires short on the ATX PSU (one at a time so you know what goes where) and connect it directly to the Amigas connector using crimp on connectors.
ATX power supplies have several +5volt lines that all go back to the same source inside but confirm this with a volt meter before proceeding.
