HD woes during install of OS3.9
« on: January 06, 2007, 02:37:41 PM »
Hi,

Just got my 3.1 kicks from Amigakit a few days ago and started installing OS3.9 yesterday.

The installation target is an A4000 with 2.5" 40G IDE hdd sharing cable with a CD-ROM.  At the moment there's only one partition on the drive, 1.5 GB which I used earlier on OS3.1.

After creating the rescue floppy, I formatted the DH0: partition, booted and started the installation.  To my confusion, it hung during the installation of C:cpu and it appears that it continued to append the file until the entire partition was full (requester appeared after a while).

I suddently remembered that the partition needed the MaxTransfer set to 0x1fe00 in HdToolBox.  Changed it, verified the change, commited the changes, rebooted and formatted the drive again.

But no, same story.  The installation hung this time too.

I know the CD's okay, I can read from it without problems.  No visible scratches, successfully copied all its contents to my iBook.

I then noticed that if I copied a chump from CD-ROM to RAM: and then from RAM: to DH0: the exact same thing happened.  So this must be a HD issue.

The hd is spanking new and I have had no issues with it so far.  I'm fairly sure this must be a configuration problem by me... but which one?

Any ideas or similar experiences?

The mask is the same as yours.  I'll try another cable tonight, there's a slight possibility that it may have been damaged when I upgraded the ROM's.

Just tested another cable, still the same.

Any other suggestions?  :-/

if all was OK before installing the new kick 3.1, something is gone wrong during the rom installation (bent pins and such)

Reseat everything you see with a socket. (CPU card also)

PS- try this device/HD diagnostic tool Q-Device (MUI required)

I think if the pins were bent, there would be more errors than just writing to the IDE disk...

To explain things a bit further:
Everything works perfectly well at first.  The disk partitions nicely, detects all 37.5 gigs too, formats the first partition without problems, and installs about 45% until it stalls at the C:Cpu as I mentioned in the original posting.

It sounds very much like an IDE issue.

Could it be the fact that I'm having a 2.5" (with 2.5"->3.5" adapter) combined with a CD-RW?   The hdd is configured as master and the CD-ROM as slave, and they are connected correctly to the cable, which is also fine.

I mentioned that everything worked fine with Kick 3.0 + OS3.1, but I do recall a couple of r/w errors.  I *know* the disk is fine, so again, probably config problems somewhere.

Just a small update in case it makes someone go a-ha:

When OS3.9 finally boots (lacking a few files due to "disk full" errors), I need to manually repair the remaining files.

Now, this is a job for the patient.

When I try to copy, say, "c:execute" from the AmigaOS3.9 CD to the HD, it lets the disk run full.  I cancel the operation, so the file is removed again.  If I run the exact same operation again, it works just fine.

Has noone here experienced anything like this before?

I'm really pulling my hair here.

Yes the boot partition is still 1.5 gigs.  Tried smaller, tried bigger, no difference.

But I don't have the 040 libs installed.  Tought I'd do a clean install, so I formatted everything - I didn't think that would matter?  I'll give it a go tomorrow and let you know.

A friend of mine did a similar install without problems, but then again, he has an 030...

install the 040 library. This is the first thing to do when a 040 card is installed and explains why it hangs on the CPU command ;-)

Install the one present in the AmigaOS3.9 CD. Then try to get a more recent one.

Ok. I have my doubts, but I'll give it a go.

Notice that it's the installation of the CPU command that fails, not running it.  It also fails on several other commands, like c:Execute, c:List, c:IPrefs, to mention a few.  c: was purely coincidental, it also fails on some in libs: and sys:storage.

Just tried with 68040.library, no go.
Re-inserted the 68030 CPU card, still no go.

This must be an issue with the hdd.

Anyone here with a relatively huge hdd that can send me their settings in HDToolBox?  How many blocks, maxtransfer, mask, etc?

I also had this problem with an A1200 with a Blizzard 1260 and a 2.5 inch Fujitsu hard disk of 2 GB.

If you reinstall you HD, choose for 4 way IDE adapter when the installation asks for it. Then it won't crash anymore.

But you could change the Startup-sequence. Find setPatch command an type this -SKIPROMUPDATES after that command.

setpatch -skipromupdates

I only had this problem with the Amiga setup above.

Did you put a Fujitsu hard disk in your A4000?
