Default Upgrade advise - hardware or software?

Hi all,

I have an Amiga 1000 which runs fine. It better after all of the money I threw at it LOL! (I cry when I look at all of the receipts). Here is what's in it:

Spirit Inboard with 1.5MB
Rejuvinator daughter boards that bring it up to A2000 specs - I think I have a 2MB Agnus, Super Denise, etc. I think I have 2MB chip ram, and 2.5 mb slow total (might be even more because I'm not using ram for kickstart).
Saphire 020 processor (running at 12 or 14Mhz)
Dataflyer with a 540MB Fireball
CD Rom drive
Multi Start with 1.3 and 3.1

For being an A1000, it runs pretty good. But, I pushed my luck and tried a CSA Derringer Platinum 030 50Mhz with Math Co. I think this broke the camel's back, so I have this accelerator card and nothing to use on it.

I'm much more of a PC expert than an Amiga expert hardware wise. Most of my systems are dual processor, including a 2.8Ghz Xeon Dually.

My questions is, should I find an A500 or A2000 to use the CSA on, or should I sell it and get Amiga Forever? I've used C64 Emulators and have been happy with the performance and "feel" of these. I'm interest in why I would choose Hardware vs. Software (is there some special reason to choose hardware - I won't be getting a Toaster LOL!)

I'll admit the family uses the Amiga mostly for gaming, with Deluxe Galaga being the favorite game. But I might like to get a programming software like AMOS for my son to try programming games with.

If I was in your position, I would sell the 030 card and get a PC Amiga emulator. The reason is, I can't see enough speed increase from 020 to 030 to warrant you buying a whole new computer for it, such as an A2000.
But as you only use the Amiga for games, I say don't buy any more hardware, just use an emulator.
One thing though: that is a very nice and highly desirable Amiga 1000 setup you have. If it is only being used for games, I would be tempted to sell that and the 030 card and get an A1200 with an 060 card. You might even be able to get an A4000 with an 040 accelerator for that.

:-?

Thanks for the advice, but I doubt someone will trade a nice 1200 or 4000 for my setup.

It does run great, has no issues, but you never know if it might take a dump someday. BTW, do you know where to look for taking care of an A1000? I've seen threads about A4000's and battery issues - I'd like to keep my A1000 in good running order. I'll search the threads for tips in the meantime.

Oh, and the idea of getting another system was due to reading reviews of the CSA 030. One guy was saying how it took his A500 to A3000 levels (he had the 25Mhz 030). I figured a cheap A500 or A2000 with this 50Mhz card and 32MB of ram would be good fun. But I'll take your recomendations and I'll give the emulators a shot before spending the $$$'s first, however.

Thanks,

Don

Heck; looking at that A1000 I would trade it for a 4000/040. Just the fact that you're across the pond holds me back.

Don't worry; your A1000 has no hidden dangers like batteries etc.
Store it in a (preferably dark) dry place and she should be just fine!

@ DonP1

Your A1000 is not desired because of its performance, it is desired because it is an icon and it has some upgrades that are highly sought-after. I know this, just by seeing what fellow Amigans think of stuff like this when it goes on ebay. You will get more for that A1000 than you think, trust me on this.
Tahoe is probably drooling right now :-P

Drooling would be a little too much; I am still too happy fiddling with my A2500UX which I just got recently.
The A1000 itself isn't very special; at least not to me.
But it's just what X-Ray says; the expansions in it are highly desireable!!

Don,
If you fancy a drive up I75 with a right turn at Detroit and 3 more hours down the 401 then I might have a loaded A2000 to interest you. It has GVP TekMagic 68060, 48 MB RAM, DKB MegaChip, ASDG Dual Serial board, Commodore A2320 De-Interlacer, GVP Spectrum 24, 2 floppy drives, CDROM, 3 hard drives (2 GB, 1 GB, 500 MB). It has 3.1 ROM and OS3.5. I recently replaced the NiCd battery with a lithium 'coin' battery setup - there was no prior leakage, I just did it in case.
It has recently begun to act up upon startup - sometimes it doesn't power on. I think the problem is power supply related or it may just be a loose connection somewhere. Once it is powered up it works very nicely. I drive a 17" monitor at 1280 x 1024 x 8bit. Here is a screengrab - some of the programs have since been removed

If you are in the area (yeah, I know, a 6 hour drive) and want to see it let me know.

Pete

Actually, I work in Cleveland 5 days a week. Are you in Toronto? We have an office up there as well, but we seldom visit.

Your system sounds really impressive, but some of your upgrades I'm not too familiar with.

I've downloaded and config'd WinUAE and I'm trying that at the moment. I want to do a lot more research before I decide what to do with the A1000.

amigakit,

Thanks for the welcome!
