Good job!
However I never hacked my a520, because I get a rgb-scart cable, to connect my amy to a TFT.

It's pretty easy to make s-video mod for at least a1200.. maybe it works on other amigas too. You just need two capacitors and two resistors. I've lost the page on my bookmarks, but have to dig.. the mod was meant for other console/computer, but works also on amiga..

There's an s-video hack for the a1200 on aminet, apparently copied from the circuit in the cd32.

I couldn't find the a520 hack on aminet though. Can anyone upload things like this to aminet or is only the author allowed? I'm wondering as the site with the hack on hasn't been updated in a couple of years and if it goes down the hack and all the other amiga info on there will be lost :-(

They're out there. I have a box and have seen others (Prevue, etc.). I got mine on eBay for ~$30. I think the main problem is new RGB encoder chips aren't that cheap. I've heard you can scavenge them out of old Megadrive/Genesis and PS1 consoles though.

Or you can get a good quality genlock. A GVP G-Lock just sold on Ebay for US$5, and it has a beautiful S-video output, much better than a hacked A520.

eek, those poor innocent genesis's, genesises, er.. genesi ? :-o er, megadrives

(sorry, drank too much coke)

A quick look on google brings up a few interesting things for converting rgb to video, it also brings up a few things that make me think the guys are some kind of con artists

this looks interesting tho http://www.jrok.com/hardware/RGB.html
the guy wants to be emailed for the price tho, so it could still be horrific

if there's a desparate need for some kind of converter unit maybe someone could knock a few together, are the chips to do the function really that nasty expensive?

But, doesn't the G-Lock require software to do the switching/fading? (ie. it won't work for non system compliant applications)

@bobamu

IIRC, the JROK is $85. I think it (or maybe it was the Neobitz converter) uses the Analog Devices AD724JR RGB encoder ~15 for the chip.

BTW, the Neobitz is a neat piece with a cheap DIY option. (And Jeff Kurtz is a nice guy...)
