I have an Amiga 4000 that was purchased from an eBay seller to be delivered Monday. One of the first orders of business will be to get a CD-ROM drive installed and working, as I assume I will need that to get OS3.9 installed. I have OS3.9 and Kickstart 3.1 chips on the way from Software Hut, as well as a Cybervision 64/3D card. (I’d eventually like a Picasso IV for this machine, but I’ll start out with the CV 64/3D as that is what’s more readily available.
Sticking to the subject of the optical drive… I have two drives that I pulled from other machines when upgrading, and it would be good if one would work inside the 4000. One is a Lite-On Model LTN-526D, which is a 52X max CD-ROM drive. The other, used previously as a “Supedrive” in one of my Macs, is a Pioneer DVR-105, which will read and write CDs and DVDs. Now, I don’t expect my Amiga will have the chops to deal with DVDs. But will the Pioneer drive work to read (and maybe even write) CDs? Looking for any advice on whether these drives might work or whether I should go shopping for something else. If so, what? Thanks! P.S. Both drives are about 7.75 inches deep. I read somewhere that the depth of space for an optical drive in the A4000 is on the shallow side. Any concern here? |

With a standard depth drive there is little space between the drive and P/S cooling fan and the cables tend to block some air flow. Lite-On has low depth (170mm, ~6.6") drives that give you a little extra space back there. (I have a Lite-On DVD/CD-RW combo drive in my A4000 desktop.)

Yes get a Lite-On drive, they are shorter and will make it easier to install. Also a DVD drive can be used with AmigaOS 3.9! The standard CD0 driver will work with CD and DVD discs!
