This is to share/discuss my opinion with you A.Orgers.
I think by going to mainstream sites and saying AOS5 will be there soon for X86 Bill's completely screwed it up. To sum up, this is not the direction I had hoped and I don't think the big part of the real Amigans are/will be happy. Real Amigans are the people that kept the platform alive in the hard years. What will happen is that not only a VERY BIG opportunity was lost, but there won't be so many people buying A1, the old users that could buy it will wait for x86 and pirate it. Even if not, will the number of people not buying A1 anymore, be smaller than the ones buying AmigaOSx86? Sorry I don't think so. It seems that some companies, and their marketing people don't see how things are in the real world. I don't personally know anyone that has bough one PC app!! I don't have much time too writte, (and actually starting to don't really give a damn about it) but in my opinion the "Community" whatever is PPC people. The ones wanting X86 for AmigaOS are a small, very vocal minority. Wasn't Amithon supposed to have it's own x86 native code apps? Where are them?! Also to me Amiga, and PPC would together give a complete different image, marketingwise if you will. I won't buy an A1 myself anymore as I wanted AOSPPC to be a strong product, or kinda of the direction. It also pisses me that it will be x86. Don't get me wrong, I like the DE though. AInc just wants markets! My impression is that they just want to use the name, and full some people in the community. If not, why didn't they reveal the direction before? The name is still strong as you've seen. Damn I even bough a F** coupon :-D I won't be here very often again so I'd like to say thanks to the people that come in here, specially the hardcore heavy posting ones. It's been cooll reading/posting. :-D The Amiga is just a computer, so it's not the end of the world, eheh ;-) |

not 'everyone' pirated... the lion share dosent pirate... and the lamers who just download an app use it once non-professionally and throw it away dont matter...since they dont have the money to buy serious applications anyways... |

When/if AOS4 for the ppc cards come out then people will pirate the OS, not all pirates use x86 machines unless all amiga/mac users have turned in to saints overnight

@Jose:
I don't think that Bill meant that AmigaOS will be x86-only, rather that in a year (and I think one should take that timeframe with large amounts of salt), AmigaOS will be DE-based and so will *also* run on x86. From what I can tell the "I want AmigaOS on x86" crowd couldn't care less either way about PPC, they just want it on x86. Since x86 is so prevalent, it makes a lot of sense that AmigaOS-DE will run on that. I've read Bill's comments a few times, and I can't see how it could be interpreted as "it will *only* run on x86". Chill out 8-) |

Hey :-D. I can't f* chill out. And I don't have time to be here now (!). Just curious to see your opinions on this. Thanks 4 replies anyways.
I don't think there is an "I want AmigaOS on x86" crowd " by the way 8-) . But I guess I'll chill out in the end and get an A1XE, and then code apps for PPC only :-D (that's if I ever finish learining what needs to be learned, but I guess with PPC assembler you have it all :-o :-x :-D, so it won't be that difficult :-o) Oh, will AInc. even let you make processor native apps on OS5!? |

It has been clear since day one that Amiga don't want to be tied to any CPU architecture for the future. Supporting more CPU architectures will allow more consumer choice.
If you want AmigaOS5 (long way to go yet) for the PPC, then buy the PPC version. Do you want AmigaOS5 for x86, then buy the x86 version. IMO there is nothing wrong with offering consumer choice. |

@MikeB:
Completely Untrue. That's very, very old. It's meanwhile been said that a change of direction had been made, that DE was 4 PDAs etc. and that 4 desktop it would be tied to hardware. It has even been said that AOS was to be ported to some games console in a some more or less big show I don't remember now. I hope AInc. goes bankrupt and Hyperion buys the complete OS rights :-D (joke, or maybe...) |

I don't care what platform the Amiga OS is on.
It's still the Amiga. As far as custom chips go... The old amiga motherboard and chips are sorely outdated. The Amiga OS is what makes an amiga an amiga. This was not true in the glory days because the amiga hardware was the best out there. But now, it is true since everything out there beats the old amiga hardware. |

Jose, no the plans for AmigaOS5 have remained largely the same. But it will still take alot of time to realize.
AmigaOS4 can be realized much sooner but for PPC only, offering a much more modern solution meanwhile. Sadly this is hard to understand for most ordinary users, therefor I personally would have preferred for Amiga Inc to keep quiet about AmigaOS5 towards outsiders for now. (But I should add that Bill is not entirely to blame.) |

"Sadly this is hard to understand for most ordinary users..."
I understand all that completely, been hanging in forums/news time to time since Collas times(before I didn't use internet). I just don't think the info passed to mainstream websites is clever at all. Saying what they said, is like saying, hey wait don't buy it know...Wonder if it's that Mickeysoft employee they contracted :-D |

Hey, guys! Here's a new wrinkle! Just buy what you like, leave what you don't like, and save the whining for important stuff!
me is waiting for OS4. When OS5 comes, I'll look at it, too.

Jose,
Why are you re-opening this can of worms again? Got bored or something?Amiga is going PPC so I don't understand your rant anyway. The "PPC" crowd has got their way, are you just trolling or what? All I can say is this: The PPC Amiga will be here very shortly. Here's the rub; It better do really well really quickly or the only alternative will be to start thinking of an x86 version as a last ditch effort to save the market. Don't worry, the PPC Amiga will have it's chance with full support from me and many others, but if it fails then we must consider alternatives. ps: Software piracy will always exist on all platforms. It existed on the 68K Amiga and it will. It's a fact of life. - Mike |

From the very start of this DE integration into AOS, it has been very clear (at least to some people)
AOS will eventualy run on multiple platforms Application's can be written using VP, to allow them to run on all AOS platforms (PPC, MIPS, x86 etc.) Native applications will also be able to be written for that extra speed. Supporting different archetectures, is not a bad thing, it can only bring good. (although if people dont take advantage of VP and only code in native, this will be bad, as it'll split the comunity between archetectures, unless people provide recompiled version of their apps for multiple archetectures)... If AOS makes it to v5, i dont think we'll have to worry about the size of our market for long. AOS 5 will not only mean the merger of two operating systems, but the merger of two communities. Thats also a good thing. People, this information has been avaliable for a long time... Read things much more carefuly please.
