Default A1200 won't give a video signal

Today I bought an Amiga 1200 from my nephew. Although the Amiga 1200 worked fine at his place, at my place it wouldn't give any image on the screen.

I have tried it on two TV-sets and with the following wiring:
- An RGB/Stereo Audio -> Scart cable (Scart on TV is flickering, but no image when starting the Amiga)
- A normal video cable used on "composite", no image there
- A coaxial cable, trying to tune in on the tv, no result, although flickering sometimes.

The A1200 is fitted with a 250mb harddrive.

Anyone a suggestion how to fix this one?

Hi!

is the workbench using a PAL/NTSC resolution?
Try booting with the early startup config with LMB and RMB... any image?

This is not workbench related, normally the A1200 has to show a purple screen with a moving floppydisc.
But even that it won't show..

Does the amiga in other ways seem to work? Does the hard drive boot? Does the diskdrive click? And you use the same psu that you used to test it with at his place?

I had a similar problem with my Amiga 1200.

Not having an Amiga-supporting monitor of my own, I resorted to using it on either a Commodore 64 monitor, or a TV. This lead to various problems, because the A1200 can display in many resolutions that aren't supported by the TV. What I got on the TV ranged from nothing to seeing the image dance all over the screen.

I ended up getting an adapter that would allow a VGA monitor to hook up to the A1200. It basically was a VGA to Amiga adapter (but did not take into account the varying screen refresh rates, meaning that it only worked for a handful of resolutions). You could try that!

Also, a good point was raised -- does the hard drive make clicking sounds? Do you see the hard drive light flash?

I have another recurring problem with my A1200, which happens when you turn it on. I think the HD may be bad -- it powers up, but the system doesn't boot, the hard drive light remains on, and I get no video output. I think the system hangs when it tries to access the hard drive. So I just turn it off and on again until it actually starts up. I never figured out what caused the problem, though.

Hope that helps a little!

From my resource base:

A1200 Hardware Frequently Asked Questions Version 2.1 - Copyright © 1997 by Warren Block

Q. Why doesn't my A1200 boot off the hard drive when I first turn it on?

A. Many hard drives don't spin up fast enough to be ready when the A1200 is ready to boot. If you can reset the A1200 after it comes up with the purple "insert floppy" screen and it will then boot from the hard drive, this is the case. The easiest solution is to just live with it and reset the machine when you first turn it on. If this really bothers you, you could replace the drive with one that spins up faster. Alternatively, AmigaOS 3.1 (if your A1200 doesn't already have it) has a longer IDE drive delay.

Q. When I first power-up my A1200, the hard drive works fine, but after a reset the hard drive is no longer recognized. What's wrong?

A. This is a problem with the way the drive handles the IDE reset signal. The easy fix is to cut pin 1 on the IDE cable (usually the one with the stripe), peel back the wires a little, and tape them off, disconnecting the reset signal. This problem is commonly reported on Conner hard drives (although I don't feel it's a significant flaw).

Yes, it works fine I guess, the harddrive is empty and I can hear the diskdrive click, the harddrive led is flashing first, then stopping.

I have tried the Amiga 1200 on two seperate tv's, a Philips 100hz TV, approx. 9 years old and an older Supertech tv. In both cases the A1200 wouldn't give a good signal (or both tv's wouldn't accept it).

But I do have an 1084S monitor lying around which I can test, maybe an A1200 will not always work on a tv. But the Philips TV is (was) a quite expensive model with lots of options on it, so I cannot imagine that tv wouldn't be able to show an Amiga signal.

This is not the actual problem.

This isn't also, I do not have a harddisk problem, but a video signal problem, but thanks for
replying anyway ;-)
