Default Why doesn't the Amiga Die?

This is my first post and I am returning to the Amiga scene after several years away (forced into using a PC-work related).

I was absoloutly amazed at the sheer amount of people still very active and continuing to use an Amiga.

Commecially the machine died a long time ago yet here we are in 2006 and the whole scene seems more abuzz than when I first got my A1200 in '92. Sure its hard to find any new games software, but hey! when there are games like Alien Breed, Cannon Fodder and the like, who NEEDS new games?

As for hardware-AMIGAKIT are fantastic on price and the sheer amount of products.

My current project is to 'spice' up my A1200! My current spec is Commodore A1200. Apollo MK2 '030'/50mHz+32 MB Ram, OS3.9, 60gb HD (2.5"-not installed yet-not straight forward I know), CF flash adaptor (Amiga-Kit) 1GB Flash card. It's all in bits at the moment but I am looking forward to getting going again-stuck on a few things so I will be asking lots of 'dumb' questions soon!!!

I have personlly come back to the Amiga simply for the pleasure of using it, getting into the guts of it, playing games on it, watching spinning doughnuts! and so on.

WinUAE is great but it ain't like the real thing and I'm more interested in the Amiga now more then I ever was.

I'd personaly like to thank all of you who have stuck with the Amiga and have given me something to come back to.

PS I hop all this Amiga Inc. stuff gets sorted soon so perhapes a 'proper' commercially viable new Amiga hits the streets!

There is something special with it that pulls you back whenever you try to leave.

As I was writing my first post I kinda knew that I'd pretty much answred it myself! I'm sure everyone has their own reasons for sticking with, or comming back to the Amiga?

I personally have never been able to answer the question of what draws me to Amiga, or the Amiga. I fail even in trying to conjecture. There is definitely something that just draws you in.

Case in point, even my friend's 11 year old daughter has asked about my Amiga since she first used it. A few weeks ago they were over and I let her futz around on my 4000. After not being able to find the START button and I explained AmiDock, she tried browsing Nickelodeon in AWeb 3.4APL, which didn't work out well because nick.com is loaded with Flash. She liked it, went around the various drives and drawers, even tried out DOpus. She gets that it (mine, at least) doesn't do all the "neat" things her Windows PC can, but that doesn't discourage her.

Welcome to the forum fatboy!!

I am in a similar position to you, I have just returned to the scene and have been panic buying on ebay and amigakit, not finished yet either....

I am living and working in Bahrain (an Amiga desert as well as a real one)but visit the UK next week on a work trip with an empty aircraft!!! so I will be stuffing as much Amiga Kit as I can into boxes and bringing it all here. I can hardly sleep with excitement. :-D :-o

I have an A2000 already and am about to take delivery of two A1200s (one towerised), I want to upgrade the towered system and use it as my main system.

Like you I am also looking forward to the day Amiga Inc launch a new up-to-date Amiga.... I won't hold my breath though

The Amiga is alive and well because it is an enthusiasts machine and always will be.

Hi Fatboy,

To Amiga.org

The Amiga is a Computer system in a class all of its own. You will not find another that alows you to do so very much from the late 80's to the mid 90's. Still a very powerful and flexible system.

WOW!!!! I've just realised the whole 'nub' of why the Amiga won't die! it's truly global, judging by all the multi-national replys so far.

Amiga = Borg or perhaps Hotel California, you can try to stop using it, but it gets in your blood :-)

Welcome back.

-Its one of those things, just recently I have had trouble with my Amiga, and did not stop unitl I put it right, over 7 hours work stripping it down to the bare mobo and then some.
Its all Ok now, but my point is simply this.
If that was my PC I would leave until I felt like it, but the Amiga is something else, simply put the Amiga is the best computer no matter what all the PC experts say. (ok not as powerfull granted) - (but easily gets my vote)
The Amiga is more friendly as a system.
Compared to any PC.
You have C,L,S,Devs,Libs, Prefs nothing to complicated about that.
Try to get into a PC that quick and easy to see exactly where you are. As the PC got any thing like Aminet ?
No but the Amiga has, with contributions from all good fellow Amiga enthusiastes.
If I am truly honest and I will stick my neck out here.

If I have a choice either to get rid of my Athlon or my Amiga, I would let my Athlon go, why ?
Because the Amiga 600 was the first ever 16 bit computer I owned. It went on from there. Now I have a good system with fully usable Internet, towered with Mediator, lots of great memories. (I say again not as powerfull as todays PC`s) but does that realy matter ?
Do I regret any of it ? No never.

Mike.
