Default Background image in workbench 2.1

How do I change the workbench background image in WB 2.1? I downloaded a background package from aminet and I can't get any of the images to work as my background. Whenever I open WBpattern and try to open one of the backgrounds I get the message "error processing IFF file." Is it not possible to use images as backgrounds in 2.1? Or is there a program that will allow me to change the background?

Sorry I have so many dumb questions, I'm new at all this Amiga stuff.

IIRC WB 2.1 only allowed IFF ILBM images as background, and only planar ones (no 24bit iffs).

You'll need to convert the picture to IFF ILBM if it's some other format.

The only thing I understood in that post was "WB 2.1" and "IFF." What's an "IFF ILBM" image? How do I convert an image to IFF ILBM? What's a "planar" image?

Like I said, I'm new to all this amiga stuff, so you have to explain in language I can understand.

Like BMP is the "standard" image file format on Window$, IFF became the standard on the amiga.

Any paint program designed for the amiga will save in IFF. On Deluxe Paint, IFF is all you can save in. Comercial programs like ADPro and ImageFX can convert most of the existing formats into IFF. Plus, doing a search on Aminet will bring up tons of shareware and freeware programs that convert various file formats into IFF and vice versa.

A terrific paint program that's now free, is Personal Paint, available on Aminet. That should take care of your conversion needs.

aminet page there you go!

If you want to convert a picture into a backdrop for your workbench, make sure to note the size and number of colors, and when converting, make sure they match, since using 2.1 isn't the easiest to get nice backdrops.

I don't know what a planar image is though. Others can give you the boring technical details. ;-)

Only AMiGA OS3 and higher support using images as a background. Tho there was a tool to make OS2 AMiGAs use iff images as a background image. Take a look at this tool "wallpaper" on aminet.

Downloaded wallpaper, but it won't load my image. When I try to load my image with wallpaper it says "couldn't load image" or something like that and then I get an error code and it resets my system.

Maybe I just give up, this is too much hassle for just a background image. Thank god I'll be upgrading to Kickstart 3.1 soon.

You have to make sure the image is an IFF image with no more colours than the workbench is set to. If you have done that it should work. I've used it back in the days when i had an A2000 with only Kick 2.04 so I know it should work.
