Hi,
I need some help: I just downloaded an ".lha" archive file containing some .guide files, that I can view on my Win XP PC with WinGuide. In the same archive there are also some ".pic" files. I tried to view them with ACDSee 7.0, but it seems that it doesn't understand them. Any advice? |

Try renaming them to .iff (examine header) and use for eg. IrfanView.
XnView is also good, dunno if it supports .iff

unless they changed something in ACDSee 7.0 from earlier versions, ACDSee SHOULD see iff files no matter what the name is.
in other words, ACDSee, like amiga, was made to read file headers to determine what a file is. This is because ACDSee had amiga programmers when it was first developed. check your plugins for ACDSee and make sure you have the iff plugin listed AND checked. (I'm still using ver 4 and that is listed under the Tools menu) |

I have IFF plugin active, just checked it out right now.
Header of the file, opened with wordpad: FORM--c--ILBMBMHD----€-CMAP----- DPPS---n--CRNG---CAMG------BODY Note: the "-" symbol represents extrange chars that appear between these other ASCII chars. I tried to copy&paste, but have to type it manually, so you can make yourself an idea. |

Ok,
I changed the ".pic" file extension to ".lbm" and it works! Great! Thanks all! |

I have noticed that ACDSee don't see iff files with an alpha channel saved by IFX 4.5
I'm guessing that's because IFX somewhat changed (or upgraded) the IFF file type and windows programs just haven't bothered to keep up. |

Have ACDSee came back on track yet (the reason for me thinking it at a certain point losing track of itself was simply that I found the entire program becoming sluggish on startup, sluggish to use, sluggish to shut down, waaaaaay too resource hungry for its own good and also behaving really odd at times with the entire application feeling like like being about looks than functionality and speed)?
I did use it quite a lot back in the days. But it evolved into something I didn't want to use at all, unfortunately. Maybe I should give it a go again, if it has made a regression or at least not evolved further down the path I described above...?

Anyway, thought I'd mention it as it's an application that a lot of PC users have, and fine for basic >=32 colour IFFs. I guess the effort involved for non-Amiga graphics applications to fully support the latest IFF revision outweighs any potential return... - Ali |

Yup. IrfanView, http://irfanview.com
It prefers that IFF's have a .iff extension, and will even offer to rename the file if it does not. |

@Spectrum75
Get InfraView.............its free and its Cool get ready for the fastest Batch conversion you have seen in your life! I use it to convert Quicktime Frames into Amiga IFF frames real fast.............then I recompile the frames in the Amiga to recreate the MOV file so that it looks like Amiga is playing Video. Cool as heck! I sometime degrade the Frames if I need to into 128 color IFFs with Floyd Steinberg dithering in InfraView. You Need this App! |
