Default MP4 Conversion

Hi guys:

I am in a bind, as my daughter wishes to convert her iTunes (MP4) song files to MP3 format.

What converter application for Windows XP do you recommend for this purpose?

Any help here would be appreciated, as my daughter thinks I am a retard (when it comes to music formats...)

I still use amiga .mod files myself...

Hi,

I've never used iTunes or any other DRM-crippled download service, but it's likely that your daughter's music tracks will be protected against doing this kind of thing. Besides, A.Org's usage policies will likely prevent further discussion...

Best to stay a "retard" (!) and continue to use normal audio CDs - or good old MOD files!!!

Hi, unfortunately if you are in the U.S. it is not possible to convert the tracks downloaded in iTunes because they are proprietary Apple files which contain their DRM system so you'd be breaking the DMCA which could lead to jail time (bypassing copy protection).

However in countries outside of the U.S. you can use a program called iOpener, or Hymn (http://www.hymn-project.org/download.php).

(edit) Sorry I just noticed you are in Canada. I don't suppose the DMCA applies there so I guess you're ok.

Thanks for the head's up on the legal proprietary thing with Apple.

I like the iStore as I'd rather buy music for my daughter from a safe source, rather than letting her open up my system to file sharing. Are there alternatives that are safe?

Thanks for the advice!

AFAIK iTunes lets you burn your AAC (Un)FairPlay files to a CD. You can of course then rip again this CD and convert the files into MP3. I suggest to either use a CDRW, or alternatively, I do believe that there is a virtual CD file loopback device software out there, so you won't need to burn the data to a physical CD rather than to a file.

Is there any way to convert MP4 on a real Amiga? I've got a bunch of ".m4a" files from my iPod (ripped from my CDs with a borrowed Mac) and it would be nice if I could convert them for use on my Amiga.
