Amiga Marketplace This forum is here so that members can alert other members to Amiga items they've seen on eBay (or other auctions). If you are selling Amiga items on eBay, you might let us know about them here. Likewise, if you're selling Amiga items sans eBay, this is the "for sale" forum.

Default Amibench thieves

I am sick of Amibench.

For the third time, I have sent money to someone selling Amiga stuff on Amibench and 2 months later, still nothing has arrived and no replies to my emails. The guy cashes my cheque and then nothing!

This is the last time I ever use Amibench until they have some sort of user registration system. I can't afford to keep throwing money away like this (

I advise anyone purchasing stuff from amibench to do some checking and asking around about the person you're buying from first, and if the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Was it a guy called Jon from Lancaster ? he is a known scammer on Amibench.

I recommend Loot (loot.com).

A user registry that only registers people with credit cards?

Hi tickly :-)

It was an A4000, which was under £50, (sounds cheap, but it had no CPU card or RAM.)
The one before that was a PIV card for £40, and the other was a couple of A12k mobo's for £30. So about £120 altogether.

I have bought several items from Amibench before and had no problems, but this is the third time out of four now that I have paid money and got nothing so I just don't feel comfortable using Amibench any more.

I had this done to me by a guy from wales for a cd drive a few years back, I toyed with driving there and knocking on his door but that would have cost more than the amount I was stung for. I put the sh*the#ds email address on every mailing list, porn site and signed him up for everything I could find for about 2 months after, he probably changed his email address anyway but it made me feel a bit better at the time (pathetic I know :-( ).

I'm in Bedfordshire, let me know if he lives near me and I'll go around a have a word!!! :-D ;-)

It's a bit unfair to categorize AmiBench in such a fashion. After all, they are performing a great service to the community and doing it admirably. They can't help it if a few of their sellers are scum.

@ Wayne
True, I have brought several things from there but now I only buy from people within an hours drive and pay when I collect the items.

Yeah your right. Wilson does a good job but really needs a better secure site to help stop bastard scammers and bastards who sell pirate software as original software.

I say name and shame the bastards.

@Paul,

The question becomes,

1) How? With the Internet so easy to fake an identity, how do you make sure they are the right person?

2) Who pays for it all? The manhours to do such a task would be monumental. Unless AmiBench started charging (don't know if they do now), it would be impossible to cover the costs

3) How would they track down a faked ID, or extract revenge on someone who didn't follow through? Something like that would take a legal department and mui money.

Like Amiga.org, Amibench is a free service, this guy does a lot for us just like Wayne and we are lucky to have both so we should condem the seller and not Amibench! I definately can understand the frustration but I have bought and sold via Amibench for sometime and always had great luck, sorry lightning struck you twice. :-( Which reminds me I need to do something for a certain Webmaster. :-)

You are right, if you want to rip someone off then your going to do it no matter what but making it a lot harder for them will just piss them off and some will move elsewhere.

Something has to be done, what? who knows, but as it now i will stick with loot.

@Lando

I'm really sorry to hear this has happened to you. I have used Amibench a couple o' times with no probs. I've also sent a cheque in good faith and received the goods fine.

I have actually had more trouble with ebay, even though it is meant to be 'safe' - I'm still chasing someone for over 300 quid, money I really can't afford to lose!

As with anything in life, its always the bad few who 'ck it up for everybody else.

Also, bear in mind that if you have e-mails from the guy that state he will send you the goods, you do, I believe have some grounds for pursuing him through a small claims court in the UK, phone your citizens advice bureau (perhaps e-mail him and threaten him with this, he might not be au fait with the law anyway and get scared and pay up/send you your goods). I would be bloody-minded enough to go after the guy, not for the money but the principle!

Lando, you`ve still a way of getting your money back...take the git to the small claims court. AFAIK it`s free for sums under £500. (or it was when my Dad had to do it to someone). Just a matter of a little form to fill out.
Not sure if you have to do it at your local court or theirs though. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau should be able to help on that one.

I`ve bought a fair bit of stuff from Amibench over the years.. probably around £500-£600 worth, and have only lost out the once to some git that took the money and run, but that was only £10.

I`ve had problems with a couple of others..one guy said he had my cheque and kept promising to post the VLab motion card to me the next day, but after 3 weeks he stopped reply to my emails, and strangely he never cashed the cheque, so I had it cancelled (

Judging from the recent spoof posts on Amibench, it looks like someone has an axe to grind in public..shame really, cos after all the crap of last year when Amibench shut down and then opened up again, this could be the last straw..
