How many here are using HD diskettes...
« on: May 02, 2006, 11:24:34 PM »
with your amiga DD-drive?
As (especially good quality) DD diskettes for reasonable prices are becoming harder to find (i dont buy overpriced No-name diskettes) im thinking of start using HD diskettes.
What are your experiences?

HD disks are not reliable as DD disks. Use DD for DD.

Hi,

I've not had any problem for short-term storage of DD stuff on HD disks, but I always use branded media (Verbatim, TDK, etc).

But for once I had some foresight and bought quite a few boxes of DD disks when they were being sold off cheaply by shops wanting to clear their stock. A couple of them even have their cellophane intact!

And no, I'm not selling!  :-D

When HD disks first came out, I didn't notice that they were different from my Amiga DD disks (and nobody told me) so I bought a box to use with my A500. They worked for a while, but eventually they all developed read errors. I thought I had a virus or something. I lost lots of important stuff.

When I finally found out there was a difference, all the local stores had stopped selling DD disks so I was screwed anyway. I still have those HD disks and not one of them has readable data on them.

When I upgraded my A500 in 2002, the first thing I needed was a load of DD disks and I got lucky and bought 1400 used DD disks off eBay for $50 - and they had Amiga software on them!

In general terms, Double Density disks are neither more nor less reliable than High Density, provided they are written to with an appropriate drive.

The magnetic medium of HD disks is different from that on DD ones. The 'coercivity' is different, which means a higher magnetic field strength is required to write to HD media.

Running HD disks in an Amiga DD (lower field strength) drive will give variable reliability. Some DD disks will be fine over a long period. Others will develop read errors quite quickly because the medium had not responded fully to the Amiga's read/write head.

I use HD disks all the time but wouldn't trust them for anything important like backups, etc.

I use on my 500 hd disks for generating my old games and they work very reliably. Just use a good brand, i for example use Verbatim disks and they works like a charm on my old chinon DD drive. I don't trust on old dd disks that you can acquire on ebay or second hand, as those usually are wear out and have lots of rot that end in an quickly dirty drive.

This is an important point. High density disks are just not reliable on double density drives. They will fail, and could eventually cause the drive to die (early).

motrucker: this is simply not true, however told you that was making up a story.
(Maybe he was selling overpriced DD-disks..?)
The diskdrive will NOT be damaged by using a different media, but as JaxAnim wrote the coercivity is different for a HD disk.
The problem is therefore finding HD disks that are working reliable, or as reliable as possible.
I think Verbatim and Sony has got a couple of votes so far?

Well, I am sitting on over 2000 blank, new DSDD 880k disks.
And, yes, I'll sell them to Amiga.org members.
Won\'t hide my location.

Hi,

I use TDK & 3M both DD/HD in the all my miggs. Some disks are over more then 10 old but still work fine after a good clean format. Ofcourse they wil parish at some point but i also keep the drive's in good order (like cleaning with a set from 3M)
