Quite a fun (as in 'original and thought-provoking') way of comparing countries. I do recognise the weak points of the Netherlands, although I had expected a lesser score (read: higher note) for economy.

I think this list is just ridiculous. Especialy I'll mention two cases, Israel (67th place among african countries) and Mongolia (108th place). I've never been to mongolia but I know some mongolians who immigrated to Japan and what I hear from them is that the state is near extinction and all economy is dominated with chinese products. I've also heard stories that it is actually possible to buy a Tank from corrupt army officials and use it inside the city with no problem, though I suspect this may be an urban legend. Anyway sorry if I offended any mongolians who're reading this, I just wanted to relate what I've heard and would like to hear more accurate news from you if you'ld like to share your views.
Anyway, just a few examples that I wanted to mention.

Ehm, why would Israel's place in the list be odd?

Israel has security problems, but there is a functioning state there. And the economy is rather strong. I don't think it's a 'more failed' state than some other states below it.

sounds just like home, jk

the list is based on several criteria:
* I 1 - Mounting Demographic Pressures
* I 2 - Massive Movement of Refugees and IDPs
* I 3 - Legacy of Vengeance - Seeking Group Grievance
* I 4 - Chronic and Sustained Human Flight
* I 5 - Uneven Economic Development along Group Lines
* I 6 - Sharp and/or Severe Economic Decline
* I 7 - Criminalization or Delegitimization of the State
* I 8 - Progressive Deterioration of Public Services
* I 9 - Widespread Violation of Human Rights
* I 10 - Security Apparatus as "State within a State"
* I 11 - Rise of Factionalized Elites
* I 12 - Intervention of Other States or External Actors

you can see the rating for each catagory, which may clear up why soem countries seem to be lower than they should be.

regarding israel position, i wouldnt exactly call israel a massive success, it is beset by economic and security problems. in anycase only the criteria above are considered.

From the FAQ :

Quote:
Q1: Why are only some countries included in the Failed States Index?

A: There are 148 states included in the 2006 index, about twice the number that appeared in the 2005 index. A handful of countries were not included because of a lack of data. The Fund for Peace (FfP) is working to improve data collection and analysis, and its principal information provider, Thomson Dialog, is constantly adding additional sources.
Yes, I think they need more resources, especially in Asia. I really don't approve some of the asian countries positions in the list.

I don't know, Israel is a country on welfare benefits. They recieve about as much from the US per citizen as the average poor family in the US recieves in public assistance.

Frankly I'm tired of footing the bill for the world, let them buy their crap on credit like the US does, why should our federal deficit be sky high as we're handing out money we don't have?

I have to give a BIG amen there! When ever I've met Israelis in NY they walk around with this sense of entitlement like their s**T doesn't stink and they expect everyone to kiss their behinds.
And this isn't new. It's decades old.
they need to stand on their own two feet and stop dragging everyone they can into their toilet.

many countries get hand outs from the usa, i think egypt gets about 2 billion and israel gets about 4 billion, it would be in every countries interest to stand on their own 2 feet.

The USA could then spend the money on some good socialist policies such as a NHS equivilant. Having watch Morgan Spurlock attempt to live on minimum wage in the USA on tv just now,i was truely shocked how {bleep}ty their lives were.
