A few questions about Cyberstorm MkI 040
« on: April 04, 2006, 06:33:22 PM »
Hi folks :-).
I have an opportunity to get this card for my A4000 for around  60 euro.
My questions about that piece of hardware are:

- Is it worth the money?
- Can it be fitted with 060/50 by just refitting CPU and oscillator?
- Where could I get that optional SCSI module and how much would it be?

Any advice would be very helpful making up my mind ;-).
Cheers...

i didn't think there was a cyberstorm mark1 040.

there was a cyberstorm mark2 040, and that could be modified to take an 060, but the 040 is a 5volt chip and the 060 is a 3.3volt chip, so you will have to find out what jumpers you need to solder, and if you need any extra resistors and capacitors to complete the 5volt to 3.3volt voltage regulator... plus change the oscillator too...

if you just drop an 060 in an 040 socket, it'll just burn out.

as far as i know, amigakit do referbished scsi modules for the cyberstorm mark2.
 :-)

if it is a fully working mark2 040, and you don't do the 060 upgrade, for 60euro it is worth every penny/cent  :-D

In the words of Doc Holiday - I beg to differ, sir :-P. There was a 040 version of MkI Cyberstorm, as well as the 060. Our hardware bible makes it clear - CLICK! ;-).

It is, that's why I consider buying it :-).

The MKI isn`t that easy upgradeable as the MKII / MKIII or much easyer to Upgrade, depending on the point of view.
For an 040->060 Upgrade you need a 060 MKI CPU-Module (the whole thing) and a ROM that holds the 68060 initialisationcode that goes into the socket on the carryerboard. So doing the upgrade is easy, but getting the parts is nearly impossible.

The SCSI-Module for the MKI is harder to find then that for the MKII, therefore it will cost you more. I have seen some go for about 100 EUR.

Anyway 60 EUR is an absolute bargain if it is in working condition. You can`t loose as you will always get that money back if you decide you don`t want the card after all.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

And what about overclocking? I mean is it possible to run it a bit faster without hurting other parts? Is this done by simply swapping that 40 MHz oscillator with a faster one?

Can`t say that for sure, as I only once had an 060 MKI.
Anyway from what is written in the BBoAH you`ll have to change the A4000 mobo Jumpers from INT to EXT (only 040@25 MHz hast INT setting just like the A3640, that way the mobo is clocked by the MKI crystal). If you rise the clock to 33 or 40 MHz and leave it to INT you will surely fry your motherboard.
No clue what else needs to be changed.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

hmmm, i've left the jumpers set to INT by accident with a cyberstorm mk2. all that happened was the machine wouldn't even fire up. not sure about frying mainboards  :-)

looking at the connector for the scsi on the mk1, to the mk2, they look the same.... but that means diddly in electronics

anyway, i doff my cap to you kind sir, for enlightening me to the existance of the cyberstorm mk1 040  :-)

btw, with an 040, it is usually just a case of dropping in faster oscillators... i cranked a warpengine040 from 28 to 40Mhz just fine. but with a dirty great big heatsink, thermal transfer paste, and fan.

Actually, CSMKII requires you to set the jumpers to INT. :-)
