Default Noob TransADF question

Hi,

Firstly I would like to say that I am so chuffed the Amiga community is still going strong ... well done to all :-)

I am looking at getting an A600 (I used to love this Amiga) to run the classics better than UAE can (especially demos) ... I have 2 questions and I hope somebody can answer them.

1. TransADF, will it work using Workbench 2.01 (the Aminet readme says Sys Ver 3.0)?

2. If not, can I use Workbench 3.1 disk with the A600 (KickRom 2.0 I'm assuming)?

Many thanks for your help but I need to know which workbench disks to get as none supplied with Amiga.

Cheers for your help.

:-)

I can highly reccomend you to get a harddisk also. Really, it saves you alot of fussing around.
I never worked with transadf, but I used cloanto's AmigaForever (wich works on Workbench 1.2+), wich works perfectly with a normal nullmodem, a 9 to 25 pins converter and an usb to com-port converter.
Anyhoo, welcome to Aorg! :-)

Cheers Speelgoedmannetje

I am going to be getting a HD ASAP ... however it does not answer the question really.

This is because Amiga Forever which I have taken a look at a bit seems to be a PC Util and my current comp is a Mac so I'm unsure if this would work the same. The port describes it as being usable only on pre Mac OSX machines.

Therefore I am looking at being able to do the above purely from the Amiga (apart from formatting some floppies as 720k on a mates PC and copying zipped ADF files to write to Amiga disks via TransADF on the A600)

I hope that makes sense. I know it will be a pain with no HD, but a labour of love really.

So, will Workbench 3.1 work with a A600 (kickrom 2.04 i think) or can I use TransADF with workbench 2.1 ?

Cheers

Hi,

If all you're after is writing out disks on your A600, you don't necessarily need to upgrade to 3.1. There are various ADF writing utilities available that'll work even on 1.3!

Have a look at DevBlocks - this contains two small CLI programs that'll read/write ADFs.

Before you try to add a harddisk, make sure you check the kickstart revision of your A600, because lots of early A600-nonHD's had a kickstart 2.05 revision wich didn't support the internal IDE-connector. You need at least kickstart 2.05 revision 37.300 for the support, and at least revision 37.350 for support of disks above 40MB.
If you have a lower version you might as well be getting a Kickstart 3.1 (although 2.05 is much cheaper, in most online Amiga-stores).

And I should add that TransADF should work fine in Workbench 2.1 :-)

Just a small correction. 37.300 does support larger than 40MB HDs (the 2GB in my A600 proves that).

I that was just because I read somewhere you need 37.350 for large disks. But it's good to know I was wrong about this :-D
