Default AMIGA & MIDI

Does anyone have a AMIGA with MIDI set-up?
I have just got a Roland D20 :-D and wish to use the AMIGA as a sequencer??
I have managed to get hold of the ADF's for Music-X
Has anyone got any recomendations of better software to use?
Also need a MIDI interface.!
Cheers!

You could build your own since the Amiga serial port uses the correct speed for MIDI interfacing.

There might be better MIDI software but I always used MED Soundstudio instead. To get the download link for MED Soundstudio join the mailing list at MED_Soundstudio_Amiga-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

If you are used to sequencers, then I find MusicX fits the bill... but I personally use OctaMED for pretty much all Music work on the Amiga.

I use the Datel MIDIMaster (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=690)

Search for Bars & Pipes on Google.

Probably the best MIDI sequencer ever made for any computer platform.

OctaMED is good, but it's a different beast: more of a sample triggering program (although it can trigger MIDI too). A bit mechanical in its approach to composing.

Bars & Pipes is for those who think more "organically".

Free and still being updated by Alfred Faust (thank you Alfred!).

Cheers!

Hi Mike,

wether or not you use Music-X (V 2.0 preferably) or Bars 'n Pipes is up to you. They are both on an equal professional level. You have to find out which one works good for you.

For me Music-X works best. It's got everything you could wish for except that the Librarian page lacks specific support for many a synth. If you can get hold of a D50 or a Casio CZ... , you DO get the bonus of editing your synth patches grafically from within Music-X!! Otherwise you can still use the Librarian to only store your patches anyway.

I use it with:

AKAI-S900, Oberheim DPS, Yamaha SY55, Kurzweil Micropiano, Roland JX-3P, Emu Pro-cussion, Zoom 9030, Behringer Virtualizer, Tascam TMD8000 + DA98 and 3x DA38 (synced with MTC/SMPTE, where Music-X slaves) and various mics.
The TMD8000's automation can only be run from a Powermac. The Mac is connected to MIDI through a MOTU-interface.

There is actually only one thing that I find a bit quirky about the Music-X program. You cannot import/load MIDI-files straight from the menu. You have to use the supplied fileconversion software that perfectly turns MIDI-files into Music-X projects.

It's amazing that the author of the program only wrote some games and then co-wrote this comprehensive mega-music-tool with musicians and studio-engineers. I've seen it do things that programs like Cubase still cannot do.

But don't forget that talent and is not a menu-option.

Bars and Pipes is available for both MorphOS and OS4 if you
decide to go either route.

OctaMED SoundStudio v. 1.3c (I think) is the latest free version (available on the MED homepage once you sign up). I'm not sure if it's the best version for an A500 though, as it is the most CPU/RAM intensive.

YAY! i had a Roland D-5... wish i'd never gotten rid of... long story.

anyway. if you can get hold of one, the Datel Midimaster is your ticket to midi magic.

octamed soundstudio is pretty damn good.
music-X is good if you have the time to spend with it.
i had bars and pipes, but never made anything good with it. too complicated. but a professional bit of kit anyway.
