Do 68010 processors just need to be shoved in for them to work? I have an Amiga 2000 and for CPU speed, this is the only upgrade I know of, found them for about 15 bucks too, so I may buy one.
Or do I need to do some actual work to get it running, and benefit from it? |

It's not really much of an upgrade...If I remember correctly, it's the same socket size as a 68000. I'm sure I am correct, 'cos I had one in my 500 , butI haven't used one since my 500 died YEARS ago.

AFAIK, just shove it in the slot!
for that extra .05% speed increase! :-P :-o :-P |

Doesn't the 68010 have a 4 byte "cache" or something like that?

I have the 68010 in my A500 and cannot find the 68000 anymore.
The 68010 has a one instruction cache, speeding up one instruction loops :-/ But you won't notice it. Some old games dont't run anymore with it. |

the 68010 is 10Mhz that I found. My processor is 7. The difference is OS3.9 :P

AOS3.1 or higher is a better investment, you will find that on a 68000 system aos3.1 will just zooom along compared to 2.04! |

It would be a neet thing to do. Make sure you get a good IC puller. Stick the thing in and experiment with it. If everything seems to work ok then get a new crystal to get even more speed. There may even be a way to add a switch so that you can change from 8MHz (is it 8?... I thought it was 8 not 7) to 10 MHz. Anyway, to change the crystal you'll need a "solder sucker" and an iron. Fun Fun Fun! Check Aminet for better instructions.

If you want to get more speed for little cost
check Aminet under 'Hacks' I think. There is exact instructions on hacking the A500 and also the A2000 which is really the same as an A500 to 14mhz. Or if you can find someone with an 'Supra AdSpeed'.. the adspeed runs at 28mhz but that is only the processor, the bus is still at 7mhz. It gives a fair bust for the money. As I remember they were about $100 give or take, when new. I have one for my A500, I felt it was worth the money. Actually..I have thought for quite some time that if I installed a new 28mhz crystal which would bump the bus speed to 14mhz (I think) and the 28mhz AdSpeed it would give a nice boost to the A500, the same would apply to an A2000. The main benefit about the 68010 was the addition of virtual memory instructions. Its fully pin compatible but it's still a 16/32 bit processor so you can't run OS 3.9 on it.
There was some hacks with the A500 running faster than 7 MHz, but on the A500 the cpu speed and floppy speed are very tightly integrated so you couldn't use the drive. Dunno if the A2000 has the same thing. You'd be better off with a dual processor board for 68000 cpus. Phillips once made a arbitter for it. Realy nice deal, 'cos the lack of caches makes it much easier to achieve data flow coherency. Just don't know if there was any one who bothered to make such a board for the Amiga. 8-)

@filson
VM-instructions ? Those can be found in the MMU which was available as an extra chip for the 68010. The only accel with extra MMU I know of is C='s 2620, but that MMU (for 020) is a different one. Just upping the clock on an Amiga ain't a good idea as floppies won't work, display-fequencies raise, and you would get some rather funny sounds instead of music .... I also don't think that an 010 would be enough for OS3.9 and I would be suprised if 3.9 would be any fun at that speed. The orginal poster has an A2000, and 020 or 030 based accels are easy and cheap to get for these (2nd hand off course), just make sure you get atleast 4 (better 16) MB of RAM, and an onboard HD- controller is also a good idea (doesn't put load on the Z2-bus). The old C= ones are probray the cheapest, just make sure you get one with 4MB and "new" ROMs (OS2+ compatible).
