Questions:
Do you simply have one bare Amiga500?  Do you have a harddrive?

Null-modem-cable.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Welcome to A.org :-)

A null-modem cable will transfer stuff easily.  You could also use floppy disks, though it's definitely not as convienient - with something called "Cross Dos" the Amiga can read double density MS-DOS floppies.  The problem is the original spec A500 isn't up to much for modern apps unless it's expanded.  A harddrive is a must if you want anything apart from retro games, and virtually all modern applications will want OS3.x - the A500 comes with 1.3 (or maybe even 1.2?).

BTW how much do you know about Amigas?  If you know enough, can you give us the spec?

Just a quick question in between:
Does OS 3.x work with A500?

3.0 no (unless you got an 020-accel) as was only released for
A1200/4000.

3.1 yes.

3.5/3.9 only with 020 or higher.

020 or higher? You're talking above me now ;)
I'm not too familiar with the tech aspects of the Amiga yet... I just bought one again, after being without it for ten years or so... ;)

Parts of OS3.5 & 3.9 are optimisied for processors >68000 and won't run on a stock A500/A600/A2000/A1000. The installer scripts on both later OSs check for a 68020 or greater (030/040/060) processor.

I have managed to load OS3.9 onto my oldest A1000, but It has had some serious hardware hacking done to it and has a 14Mhz 68020 inside.
Cache Ya,
Craig.

Busy playing with my Trainz and loving it!

@emi, nefilim

On PC I use dms2adf for creating ADF files from DMS. Sometimes I also use ADFopus for viewing ADF files and copying files from LHA archives to ADF. Then I use GZIP to create gzipped files (for example "test.adf.gz" must be renamed to "test.adz") which I copy together with TransADF on PC 720KB formated disk.
On Amiga I use dos2dos to transfer files to amiga formated disk. Start WB, start CLI and using transADF unpack gzipped adf on anoter amiga disk.

I hope this might help you.

Yeah, that helped a bit too :)
I think I'm getting the hang of this stuff now actually. I'm gonna get Cloanto's Explorer and try to get hold of a harddrive for my a500. I think that must be the easiest way... otherwise I guess I'll have to get some CrossDos or similar program to transfer stuff by disk, but I think it seems so much easier with a null-modem-cable and a Harddrive, even if it might take longer time...

Thanks for all your help guys!

Regards,
Thomas

For retro games and stuff back2theroots is good.  The files are mostly ADFs.  That's great if you have an emulator, but they will need putting onto real disks for use with a "real" Amiga.

If you're looking for more "serious" software, Aminet (that's the US mirror)  is a huge FTP archive of Public Domain apps, games, music etc.  The files are compressed with LHA - you will need a harddrive (unless you love swapping disks!) and the LHA archiver, availible there.

Remember that a lot of the things there will need OS 3.x or 2.x - if you've got a really old Amiga or are using 1.x ROM images on the emulator then it won't work.
