Just tried copying my S folder to another partiton as part of a routine backup. Amiga decided crash during copy..
Now workbench does not always bootup and if it does, runs like a pc full of spyware!... Shall investigate with disksalv later, but just wondering why the amiga has lots of problems like this.. I have had problems like this many times and is extremly annoying! using os 3.1 btw.. |

FFS is fragile. SFS is rock solid in comparision (and it's free). PFS3 is great aswell, but quite expensive. |

I have been told about sfs before and i feel it must be time to make the switch!
Is there a file i can just burn to cd to transport to my amiga to change the filesystem? Or will i loose all data during the switch and have to backup to a pc first? |

I've been wondering this since way back in the 20th century...

SFS is on Aminet. The file you need to copy to your Amiga in order to install it is SmartFileSystem which is in the L directory in the SFS archive.
Installing SFS in the RDB of the disk will not in itself destroy any data, but you have to delete your FFS partitions and create new SFS ones in order to actually use it, which will obviously destroy data. I would recommend doing a backup before installing new filesystems, even though this shouldn't in theory destroy any data. -- moto |

According to the Jargon File, a journalist once asked hacker Paul Boutin what he thought the biggest problem in computing in the 90s would be. Paul's straight-faced response was, "There are only 17,000 three-letter acronyms."

get the main archive of sfs from aminet and the latest update from here: http://home.wtal.de/js/
the installation of sfs on the rdb of the disk is harmless but if (of course) you set your partitions to use it in the place of ffs you must format them, so a backup is a MUST and just in case... it's better to do it BEFORE you even install sfs to the rdb...

FFS is just fine for normal use but It does not like transfering of large files. I find that doing any sort of file transfer over about 200mb it will usualy fail causing the copied file to not work properly or the system will just freez. If you need to keep using the FF System then just remeber to copy or move files in small bite sized peices. Not an entire Partition.

Who actually has files over 200Mb on an Amiga anyway? The biggest file I've ever had in my Amiga history is a 100Mb ShapeShifter hardfile. Next biggest is a 17Mb DOOM wad. I used to regularly back up my 2Gb FFS partition to a FFS backup partition with no problem. SFS is definitely better with the large files though. Shapeshifter runs much faster. |

i have found the FS of amiga to be one of the most stable. i have seen the OS die on me or guru's all over the place, but the fs always pulled through. and it can get a pretty though beating sometimes.
perhaps your amiga is slow, because the fs is doing a check in the background. it will allow you to use your machine already, but it _will_ be slow because all of the activity going on in the background.

I used to have partition and file system problems. I used Disksalv and reformatting to solve problems once in a while. But since I upgraded to O.S. 3.9 years ago, I've not had those problems. If I power off the Amiga while it is writing to disk, I let it go through it's normal automatic revalidation for a while and it works as normal.
I did try SFS when I got my Elbox FastATA controller, but it would eventually give me disk errors every time. Since going back to FFS, I've had no problems. - Lars |

I finall took the plunge and installed sfs tonight, following the easy guide on EAB.
So far so good! Just restoring my folders now...:-D @logicalheart.. Are you saying that its better to stick with FFS? :-? What do most people here use btw. SFS or FFS?.. or even OFS?..

I never had any problems with FFS. Not even with big files. Once I had a problem that a file I transferred became corrupted. In the end that seemed to be dodgy hardware.
I still use FFS. I'm used to all the tools and stuff that go with it. SFS does have some bugs in it or is it completely finished now?
