Default One for the Scots

(I thought Wilse in particular might appreciate this)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland...bbie/mak.shtml

Cool, huh?

Oh and have a good Burns night if you celebrate it...

I was wondering, why don't the English have something similar?
Is it perhaps because we have more than ONE poet of note? ;-)

Aye, pretty cute, especially wi' it being hosted on the Norther Irish site.

Just finished my haggis, thank you.
I'm now supping a delicious Macallan, whilst watching a particularly poor example of the national game (fitbaw) be played out, live on BBC Scotland.
Dunfermline have just gone a goal up against Livingston, via a penalty.
Haggis - Whisky - Fitbaw - Bliss.

Oi! Less ae that, sonny! We've mair than oor fair share ae bards North ae the border!
There's Rabbie Burns, for a start.
Then there's, eh, Robert Burns.
And don't forget, eh, erm, Robbie Burns....

OK, fair point.

Aside:
Everyone should read Burns' "To A Mouse", one of the best poems I've ever read.
Check it out here:
http://www.robertburns.org/works/75.shtml

It also provided the title for Steinbeck's most famous novel, "Of Mice And Men".

And for those that can't read gibberish, here is an English translation of the same poem. :-)

Don' forget yon ASCII, a wordsmith worthy of mention

X-D
"Ah staggered badly as a cloon,
tanked up high on ales and pills.
When all at once Ah saw a crood,
A host, of sassenach oot fer thrills!

Beside yon bar, beneath the trees,
Shouting and fighting in twos and threes."

And for those that can't read gibberish,
Actually, that compliments the original.
It gives the poem meaning, if you don't understand old Scots.

On the other hand, the English translation is phonetically, well, pish.

TAE A FART (BURNS SUPPER)
Oh whit a sleekit horrible beastie
lurks in your belly after the feastie
Jist as you sit doon amang yer kin
There starts tae stir an enormous win'
The neeps 'n'tatties 'n' mushy peas
Start workin' like a gentle breeze
But soon the puddin' wi the sauncie face
Will hae ye blowin 'a' ower the place
Nae matter whit the hell ye dae
A'bodys gonny huv tae pay
Even when ye try tae stifle
It's like a bullet oot a rifle
Ye hawd yer bum ticht tae the chair
An try tae stop the leakin' air
Shiftin' yersel fae cheek tae cheek
An pray tae god it disnae reek
But aw yer efforts go asunder
When oot it comes, a clap 'o thunder
Richochets aroon the room
Michty me a sonic boom!
God Almichty it fairly reeks
Hope a huvnae shat ma breeks
Tae the bog a better scurry
Aw whit the hell, it's no ma worry
A'body roon aboot me chokin'
Wan or twa ur nearly boakin
A'll feel better fur a while
Canny help but raise a smile
"Wis him!" I shout wi accusin' glower
Alas too late, he's just keeled ower
"Ye durty bugger!" they shout and stare
A dinna feel welcome any mair
But where ye go, let yer win' gang free
Sounds like jist the job tae me
But whit a fuss at Rabbies party
Ower the sake 'O' wan wee farty.
