Default Bad ROM symptoms

Other then the red screen at boot up, is there anyother symptons for completely bad roms?

I was reading another thead (in this forum) that said if the roms were reversed (in a 1200) that they could be damaged. I am not sure if they mean reversed in orientation (chip "dot" on the wronge side) or swapped in location.

Thanks,
Bri

If the ROMs are completely dead, or inserted the wrong way around you'll just see a black screen.

Putting the chips in the wrong sockets won't hurt them, the Amiga just won't boot.
Putting the chips the wrong way around in the sockets will kill them after a short time.
In an A1200 the ROMs must be placed so that the dots faces the left side of the socket(towards the PCMCIA slot) but because the sockets are bigger than the chips,it must be aligned so that the leftmost pins of the socket are empty. (If you fill the socket from the left you risk burning them out)

Red screen usually does not mean the ROM is bad. If the ROM is bad, just nothing happens after power on. Red screen usually has a reason related to addressing the ROM.

The ROM chips get damaged if they are put in in the wrong direction because of short-cirquits.

If you swap the two ROM chips, it's the same as above: just nothing happens. No damage. Swap them again and it will work.

Bye,
Thomas

What is the proper location for the chips? Which one goes on the front (with the PCMCIA slot to the left}

What ROMs are you installing, the original 3.0 or 3.1 ?
For 3.0, there's a piccy on Amiga-Hardware.com showing them.

For 3.1, (should be part numbers 391773-01 and 391774-01) 391773 goes in the bottom socket marked U6A..making sure they're both aligned as show in the pic for the 3.0 ROMs.

Thanks Doobrey!!

Would a dark gray screen be a symptom of bad roms? Probably a multitude of other things that could cause this, huh?

When you switch the computer on, watch the power LED. If it stays half bright, the ROMs are bad or swapped or not present. If the LED becomes brighter half a second later, everything is ok. At this stage the screen color does not matter, because there is nobody there who could change it. Only if the power LED starts to flash, the screen color has a meaning.

Bye,
Thomas
