Default Amiga where?

Hello,
i recently was seen on this webpage www.amigakit.com a board called Pegasos.
Am i right, that you could build your personal Amiga?
That would be kind a cool.
What i like to know are some issues.
Anybody build his Amiga that way?
Where could i buy the things i need. I live in Los Angeles, perhaps somewhere here is even a dealer.
Software i need to run is pretty much standart. Email, FTP, Newsgroups, Binaerydownloader, Imageeditor&viewer. Games are not my real concern so far.
Also i seen that you can run Linux. Is it possible to run dual?
I know that a lot of questions. But i need to know all that. I am not sure, if i upgrade to a new pc or maybe an Amiga. Personally i prefer Amiga, since that was the system i really liked.
Any help would be great.

Joerg

It's usually done through mail order. Your boards, cards, drives, etc can be ordered through a distributer here in the US.

Get the Pegasos II G4 1Ghz Motherboard, a case, and all the other stuff you need at http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/index.php?currency=USD.

Then pick up a copy of OS4/MorphOS/WarpUp etc and you're set.

Well, i was checking the page.
I seen also complete systems from (was it) Gensis and Versalia.
The thing is, i don't have anything (i use a notebook). So i am not sure, if it is not better to get a complete system and have the os installed.
By the way, which do you have?

Hi nagaflas

Well, if you buy into a Pegasos you'll get MorphOS and not AmigaOS4. If you buy into an AmigaOne you'll get AmigaOS4 and not MorphOS. But in both cases you'll have Linux.

Pegasos != AmigaOne and MorphOS != AmigaOS4

Regards
Thomas

Yes, dual boot is possible thru simple boot-menu.

Does AmigaONE have working DMA with Linux now? Someone tried to get it working recently I heard. Does DRI work?

Both work with Pegasos II at least (Pegasos also has official support in the Linux kernel).

which solution is better? Could you run Amiga OS4 on Pegasos?
AmigaOne seemed to look a little more expensive.

I would rather try to get a AmigaONE or one that atleast runs AmigaOS4. It might be hard to get a amigaone right now though, unless you find a used one.

The pegasos will sadly not run OS4 but instead a OS called MorphOS which is similar, but wont run new software for the OS4 though it will run some classic software using emulation.

There have been some new hardware for OS4 announced, which you might want to keep your eyes on. But there is sadly no eta and who knows what happens in the meantime...

But this is just my personal opinion.

I hope OS4 will one day be ported to the Elbox Dragon board (if it's released), so we can keep our classic hardware and run OS4 on it.

I prefer Pegasos and MorphOS myself (well, I'm one of the MorphOS developers actually ;-)). I'm not going to tell you which one is better for you (since I'm obviously biased, and I can't know what exactly you're looking for).

Anyway, here's An Introduction to MorphOS and The Pegasos Book.

You might also want to take a look at www.morphzone.org and www.morphos-news.de. Also, you can join #morphos on freenode.org irc network for live help and answers.

To be honest, i am totally confused.
So the AmigaOne is not available, but is the one version what runs Os4.
Pegasos does not run OS4, but is available.
Which one should i use, if i want to run OS4?
I mean, what makes me (thinking) of buying Pegasus or AmigaOne is, that it could run different OS's.
To me, it looks like only Pegasos is the only choice so far. Or you willing to wait, well how long for AmigaOne.
Correct me, if i am wrong.
Geesh, the last time i used the Amiga, i was playing with OS2 i think. I really liked the shell and the ease of use.
Anybody using Pegasos or AmigaOne on a daily basis?

@yester64

Lets reiterate: Both MorphOS and AmigaOS4 are very similar. They can both run the old 68k Amiga apps and even some games. However, both need UAE to be able to run the older, hardware hitting games. Also, both have the exact same shell and commands you had with AmigaOS 2.x (and 3.x).

MorphOS currently runs on Classic Amigas equipped with PPC accelerator (Cyberstorm PPC, Blizzard PPC), and Pegasos systems. Pegasos hardware is available currently with 1GHz 7447 (G4) CPU.

AmigaOS4 runs on AmigaONE hardware, which is not available at the moment. There are at least two ongoing projects to bring new hardware to run OS4 on, but the schedule of these is anyone's best guess.

Personally, I prefer AmigaOS4 to MorphOS, but... well... I'm an OS4 betatester, so I'm biased as well ;-)

AmigaOS4 is under constant development, and a new pre-release is due to be released this month.

The future of MorphOS is less certain; nobody knows when the next release (1.5) will appear, and a lot of people are beginning to think it might never appear...

You can learn more about AmigaOS4 at these sites:

There are lots of OS4 screenshots on these sites:

Rest assured, the development on MorphOS continues as we speak. You need not worry.

PS. All the links I mention document the currently end-user available MorphOS version (1.4.5). Needless to say, the future MorphOS 1.5 will be even better.

@yester64

You only have three REAL choices in Amigaland. A classic Amiga or Pegasos/Morphos. The better choice is to get amithlon and uae which will run AOS on your nice new pc.

Ignore the silly talk of new hardware for os4 until there is something actually available and not some fluff posted on a forum to keep the carrot dangling in front of the donkeys. Someone mentioned the dragon but be warned Elbox put viruses in their drivers which delete the rigid disk block from the harddrive.

Trusting Elbox would be like trusting an invisible condom.
