I keep reading about problems with Boing Bag 2.
The ROM Update slows down your computer and eats away ChipRAM some people say. Also some new system files (libs) degrade performance. Is this true and isn't it better just not to install BB2? I will soon installing a fresh Wb on my A4000 and I want it to perform as good as possible (play Doom for instance). |

I doubt there will be any problems if you just install bb2 without the ROM update.... I have never noticed any significant slowdown that way.

The only module inside the ROM Update from BoingBag 2 that causes trouble is the scsi.device update. It can be disabled by adding SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device" to the SetPatch line.

Is the scsi.device causing slowdowns?
I read in a topic about ADoom that the ROM Update made ADoom run about 10fps slower. Can't use that

Then disable it, and you will most likely need to do that anyway, if your computer goes into a reboot loop.

Ok????
Dont we need the scsi update to be able to read Hard drives >4gb??? Why is the scsi.device there? |

Doctorq is talking nonsense. Scsi.device is always there in the ROM update, not only in BB2 and it is indeed needed to access HDDs larger than 4GB. The problematic module in BB2 is the updated exec.library. IIRC it contains a new memory management which might cause slow-downs in some situations. So either don't install the ROM update of BB2 or disable the exec.library update. Bye, Thomas |

In all the A1200 machines I have had with OS3.9 installed, the only troublesome module was the scsi.device in the Boingbag 2. With it installed the computer goes into a reboot loop, and without it, it has worked just fine. Had to do it with both an A1200 with B1260 and an A1200 with B1230. With the scsi.device from Boingbag2, it couldn't read the harddrive correctly, without the scsi.device it could. I believe the updated FastFileSystem and the NSD file in devs: is there for a reason.... |

isn't there a fix for the exec ??? I think I have read somewhere of a fix for memory transfers...
edit: it appears I saw NewCMQ060 from http://phase5.a1k.org/index.php?id=1 , will this do? or is it completely irrelevant? :-? |

@Framiga Why do you say this? From what i've heard exec44 is faster and as stable as the exec of BB2 is. |

I tried BB2 on my system and noted a significant slowdown. I just made sure that the ROM updates were turned off and reverted to the 68o4o library (note: this replaces the 68040 lib) and my speedy system was restored.
Your mileage may very depending on your config, but if you have a 68040 CPU installed I'd recommend you backup first and try for size. |

@AmigaMance
"Why do you say this? From what i've heard exec44 is faster and as stable as the exec of BB2 is" on my system (and IMHO) it isn't. (other some weird side-effects). Feel free to try it . . . its always the best way to test things :-) |

I guess I better find a good backup program and start testing performances on my machines. Testing with BB1 and BB2 with or without the ROM update.
