Default A1200 + 68030 accelerator + extra RAM

Hi folks,

I have a A1200 with harddrive, 68030 (40Mhz), and currently fitted with 12M of extra RAM (8 + 4). I am considering upgrading RAM expansion to 64M (32 + 32). The accelerator is a "Turbo 1230 MK II" board fitted with 2 SIMM sockets.

I seem to recall in the dim and distant past (for me at least) there is some sort of conflict with extra RAM and the PCMCIA slot??

Can anyone explain exactly what the issues are re the above.

many thanks

Thought there was only conflict with some Ram boards that go over the typical 4 Mb limit. Didn´t know that 68030 boards had problems with the pcmcia memory area :-?

I don't think it'll be a problem, since the memory on the accellerator is inline with the CPU (ie FastRAM), rather than relying on the A1200 itself (ChipRAM). I doubt the memory on the card is anywhere near the PCMCIA memory addresses.

[EDIT]
BBoAH says the card is "PCMCIA Friendly"

- Someone please design SOME kind of DIY accelerator for the A4000. -

If the turbo has a CPU of it's own (doesn't rely on the built in 020 for adress space for memory) there should'nt be any problems with the PCMCIA.

Another indicator is if the card can take more than 8Mb of memory it's most likely PCMCIA friendly.

It is not that an 030 card does not conflict with the PCMCIA by default.

I remember having a MTEC1230/28RTC in the past that went up to 8MB but disabled the PCMCIA when going past 4MB.

Poor design in my opinion since the 030 has plent of address lines.

This conflict was ironed out of MOST cards for the A1200 after a short time. If you are already over 8Mb, you should be OK. Most of the problem cards had this conflict right at 8Mb or over.

Hi all the folks who replied on this thread,

thanks for your feedback seems consensus is that a conflict is most unlikely, I guess I need to pick up a (16 bit )pcmcia card up and try it to confirm for definite before going for thr RAM upgrade.

Will let you know how things work out

cheers

The accelerator you're talking about (Apollo1230 MK2) IS PCMCIA friendly so just smack on two 32MB simms without delay (2*32Mb is max for this card).
