Default Amiga 4000/060 Desktop FOR SALE

Hello everyone. I've just listed my Amiga 4000 desktop with Cyberstorm MK III 060@50Mhz and Cybervision64 on eBay here:

ITEM BACK ON SALE AND THIS TIME THE HIGH DENSITY FLOPPY DRIVE IS FIXED!

Commodore Amiga 4000/060 Desktop (FULLY LOADED!!!)

I hate to get rid of it but I'm not using it (don't worry, I still use my even more upgraded A4000T every day). I figure I might as well send it to someone who can make more use of her than I (and hopefully put some of the money towards buying a new Amiga ;-) )

Short:

Commodore: Amiga 4000 Desktop
· 68060 @ 50 Mhz (Cyberstorm MK III)
· SCSI-3 ULTRAWIDE (68pin) controller
· 50 Megs Ram (2 Chip + 48 Fast)
· 2 GB IDE Harddrive
· 24X IDE CD-ROM drive
· 24bit graphics card (Cybervision64, 4Meg version)
· High Density floppy drive (flakey) <-- FIXED!!!
· External “Master 3A1” floppy drive
· NEW CLOCK BATTERY
· Kickstart/Workbench 3.1
· All AmigaOS 3.1 disks and manuals
· CyberStorm MK III disks and manuals
· CyberVision64 disks and manuals
· A4000 keyboard, mouse, and keys (x2)
· USRobotics Sportster 28,800fax modem (external)
· standard amiga joystick
· 1 power cord, 1 RGB-->VGA adaptor, 1 passthrough video cord

*sigh* Why do things like this never appear on eBay UK? :-(

Looks/sounds like a beautiful bit of kit. Wouldn't really surprise me to to top 850-900 USD...

Hello everyone,

You now have a second chance to get this great system. Last time it didn't sell (didn't quite get to my reserve).

HOWEVER, NOW IT IS BETTER! The reserve is lower and I managed to get the high density floppy drive WORKING!

Happy Bidding.

Being new back onto the Amiga scene, I am curious - what makes this computer worth 800 dollars? Is it just rarity/scarcity or is it a "collectors" market kind of thing? This shouldn't be taken critically, I am genuinely curious!

Well first off as you know, the Amiga is not produced anymore so there is the supply/demand issue so you cannot compare prices with the crap PC you bought at CompUSA to a fully loaded Amiga. Also it is because it is the top of the line Amiga model, and upgraded with the fastest 68000 series CPU accelerator with all the goodies. Naturally this setup will cost more than a Amiga 500 system. Does that make sense?

Well, to a degree I hear what you are saying, but if it was just about power, it would seem that it would not be a reasonable price to pay, given that for 800 bucks you could get a pretty tweaked PC that would outstrip in every way this Amiga.

If there are collectors who want to have these because they collect Amigas and this is one, then I certainly understand that.

Another reason for high prices on this kind of equipment would be rarity. Have most Amigas gone into the dump? If so maybe that explains the cost. These systems are expensive because there is high demand and very low supply.

I was just trying to get a feel for it. I see auctions on Ebay for older Amigas going for a lot less than 800 so that's another reason why I was questioning this.

The price of a system is only set when its actually sold.

This machine here is a fully loaded one. For an amiga enthousiast loaded with cash this might be an interesting buy. At least when that person is not after tinkering with hardware or likes to collect items himself.

Then this machine is worth quite some cash considering it is an A4000 with an 68060. So people wanting a beefy amiga will bid higher on a system like this. It saves them the time of gathering material to acheive the same.

Personally I like to gather items myself. I started with a stock machine looking for upgrades and expanding it along the way. In the end you probably pay more in total but I think it is more fun building an amiga that way.

An other type of buyer might show interest in this kind of machine. They buy the loaded system and dissassemble it selling the parts to buyers like myself.
This way they try to make money out of the old amiga.
I think $800 is too much to attract that kind of buyer.

True, but for the Amiga enthusist a tweaked out PC still can't compare to a genuine Classic Amiga with all the goodies. I also have an A4000T at home that is even more upgraded than the A4000D I have on eBay. I could probably get a small fortune out of the thing (especially with it being a Tower) and buy a fancy new PC or even an AmigaOne which would blow my A4000T away in every aspect. Still, I would never DREAM of selling my A4000T. Believe me, I still want to buy an AmigaOne (or possibly Amy'05) one of these days but I intend on taking that A4000T to my grave. :-)

Sure it's illogical. Sure, as my wife constantly complains, I'm far too emotionally attached to that aging hunk of circuitry. Perhaps it because I practically built the thing from scratch, slowly gathering bits and pieces over the years. Or perhaps, as a collector, it represents having the epitome of the Classic Era, but I think it's more than just that. Simply being an Amiga user nowadays is illogical. That's because the Amiga is more about ideals and philosophy than practicality.

Sure Amiga (both Classic and New) cost more than the alternative but people are willing to pay that because it not about GHz and GBytes, its about the experience. As Hyperion recently put it, Amiga is FUN. :-D

Just my 2 cents (or $800 )

Again, if you want to buy a fully loaded Amiga, you do it for collecting, nostolgia, and not for power in 2005. You are much better off buying a PC or Mac than this if you want to do modern things with it. The reason it costs more is obvious; it is rare and there are not many for sale today. NOT because it is faster or more powerful than other platforms. The casual ebay browser that runs across this item on ebay will laugh and think what kind of idiot would bid on this.

And as far as why a A4000 costs more than other Amigas is, it was the flagship, latest model from Commodore. It blew the doors off the Amiga 1000 or 500. (512K vs 18MB, 16bit vs 32bit, 68000 vs 68040, OCS/ECS vs AGA.) Some may disagree, but the A4000 was simply the best model from an Amigan's point of view back in the day and more or less today. (The A3000 was also great, and IMHO the A3000+ would of been the ultimate Amiga!)

There still are some video people out there too that wouldn't mind having such a machine. An A4000D is quite a powerful video box w/ a Toaster/Flyer setup installed. Video has always been both a boom and a bane for US Amiga prices. Just compare prices in the 2nd hand market in the UK and you'll see how much the Toaster/DPS etc. still boosts the North American market. Even A2000s fetch a nice price far beyond logic due to older Toaster capabilities.

@lymang

hmmm, Im sorry...but I dont think my Amiga comrads here really gave justice as to one of the reasons why we still use Amigas.

They are simply, incredibly powerfull considering how old they are.........honestly, I have gone to Computer artist events where people show off their stuff on their ultra powerfull Macs and PC's, and was amazed that we can actaully do the same stuff on an Amiga running on a 68030 at 50mhz!

Most of us consider Amigas OS to be the most powerful in the world...I have yet to see an OS that works as good........MacOSX surely gives the impression that its pretty close though.

Yes Macs and PC have ten billion times more calculating ability....and can render stuff in 2 seconds that will take me 5 hours or more to render.......WHich is why I use a Pentium 4 as a Giant Dongle for my teeny weeny Amiga CD32 with SX32 Pro. (this system is the same as an A4000 by the way, minus the Upgradability...just in a game console case)

Anyway the OS does what you want it to do...incredibly easy...and most of all, you can master this OS like no other.....what a pleasure! seriously..im not exaggerating.
even when a Mac or Ultra Powerfull PC lands in my hands (I often get them free) I keep coming back to my Amiga because it does exactly what I want it to do and how I want it..and it mutlitasks like heck..........I still hate the way Macs and PC's supposedly multitask........horrible and unworkable............

that said...I would never tell an Mac user or PC user that they should try an Amiga......one has to desire to see it for oneself. plus in reality, we are too spoiled today to see how cool the Amiga really is.

Amiga is the only True PERSONAL computer.........the others are just generic machines.......dont think anyone would ever love their Mac or PC they way an Amiga user loves his Amiga.

Hope I shed some light of understanding.
