it looks like a digitizer (to grab frames from a video source)

Oh thanks.

What useful use could i do with that?
Is it able to capture frame at real time, to for example, plug the composite output of the amiga in and display it windowed on a RTG screen?

That's a digiview (as you may have guessed).

It captures mono video signals, the idea is you capture different colours of an image by viewing through a set of filters filter. The supplied software combines the images into a single colour image.

The pictures on the early NewTek demos were done with these (IIRC it was their first product).

Ahh, this brings back memories... I was using one with a friend's A2000 back then... the coloured plastic "things" were quite something... We couldnt even understand what the input was, so we messed quite long with an RF signal instead of a composite :-D

At the end, we were quite amazed when we saw our faces on his 1084...

I had one of the A1000 Digiviews.. complete with the color wheel and a huge stand for the B&W camera. I remember at the time, the Voyager 2 spacecraft was just passing Neptune. I grabbed a bunch of frames from the NASA feed. It was kinda cool to think my Amiga was connected to someplace at the edge of the solar system... :-) Sorta...

Just for completeness: this is a 'slow scan' digitizer: it does not work in real time, but reads just one pixel (some?) on each line during the video scan, so you get a full (monochrome) picture in ~6 seconds - you'd have to keep the video very stable during that time. :-)

Doesn't the VT have a similar feature where it takes like 3 frames of video and compiles a single digitized image from it?

Mac Mini 1.5GHz, that might run MorphOS someday, when the fools who own it come to the realization that 30 minutes just isn't enough time to play with it enough to decide whether or not you like it enough to cough up $200.

- Someone please design SOME kind of DIY accelerator for the A4000. -

This digitiser can still be helpful, if you have the stand, camera and the Digidroid too. The Digidroid was (is) the filter, that is automated by plugging it into the joystick port. If there's any interest, I can pull the whole setup out and grab a photo to post of the entire setup.
